Part ID
Still finding things in my late Father's garage. All Dad wrote on it was 35 Ford sedan. Anyone know what it is? Anyone in need of it? Thanks in advance.

Re: Part ID
Thanks for your responses. I have received conflicting results on the part ID. Dad masking taped on it many years ago "35 Ford Sedan" on the part. If I list it on the Swap Meet I wish it to be accurate. i recognize it's not a sought after part however I am unwilling to scrap a piece of history if someone wants or needs it. Dad knew his stuff about Fords so I'm inclined to believe it is indeed '35. If interested PM me.

tomcarman……. For the 35 spare mount, you can find the part number embossed into the cast iron on the inside of the mount including the suffix letter "-A", "-B", or "-C". Three different tire carriers are listed for '35s depending on body type: 48-1433-A (models - 700, 730, 740, 750); 48-1433-B (models - 710, 720, 760, 770); 48-1433-C (model - 790). If indeed it is a '35 carrier, that embossed number will begin with a "48-" prefix. Can you find that embossed number? DD |

Re: Part ID
The first picture below is a '33-'34 carrier. It stands taller than the '35 carrier when sitting on a flat surface as shown. It's not as robust looking as the '35. The detail shapes are different. Compare the '33/4 in the first pic to your green '35 in the second pic. Like I said above, look for that "48-" prefix on your green mount! DD

Thank you for the insight. I looked inside and sure enough there was a cast serial #, albeit obscured. I reached in there with a small wire wheel on the cordless and got a lot of crap off it. Upon inspection all I could identify was the veritical portion of what should have been the 4, I could definitely identify the 8 and the dash ( - ). Beyond that it appears the casting was made on a Monday. Think I'll just save it as a wall hanger as it appears there's no interest for it. I'd like to thank you for the excellent info and photos. |

Re: Part ID
Now that you have established that this Spare Wheel Holder is for the 1935 Ford, you now have to determine what body style it is for. You can see that they are different heights? The Part Number is cast inside, as per photo. Hope that this helps. |

Re: Part ID
Just as iin 1935, the 1936 Ford Spare Wheel holders also came in different heights, depending on which body style it was intended for. I know that the Grey one is off a 1936 Ford Phaeton. With these old Fords, you live and learn. |

Re: Part ID
Thank you Mercman. Interesting photos compared to the one I have. Your 1st photo shows the SN near the lip. The part I have the SN is down inside. Also, in the latter two photos the subject appears to be stamped, wherein mine is cast and much more stout. Also the SN in my piece is mostly obliterated from the casting. I wonder if Ford figured out a way to save a nickel at some point by stamping instead of casting, paricularly on overseas vehicles.??

Re: Part ID
No, I won't scrap a piece of history. I'll make it a wall hanger for car keys, or perhaps cut an old hub center, bolt it onto the part, hang it on the wall and drape my coat on it. Who knows but without destroying the part it can be repurposed in useful unique ways so if anyone is in need of 35 spare tire mount I have one. Still finding much "stuff" in Dad's garage. I sure miss him. Hope you all understand.

Re: Part ID
Elaborating on V8COOPMAN's post, in addition to differences in height, the mounting surface where they attach to the body differs between them. The A-suffix version's mounting surface is convex, the B-suffix version's is concave, and the C-suffix version's is flat.

Re: Part ID
Thanks DavidG and all the others who contributed their knowledge. Based on DavidG's input it appears this is a C-suffix version as the mounting body mounting surface is indeed flat. What sedan it fit is unknown to me. I can tell you that it is 6" exactly from the mounting surface to it's highest point of the plate. I'm not interested in prolonging this thread however out of much curiosity can anyone post a good pic of one in use on their '35? Truthfully when I found it I first thought it was a spare tire mount, but upon further thought It also looked like it could have been some sort of engine, front end or transmission mount. Dad and his brother had many many Fords over the years but never a '35 in my 60 plus years of memory. In the end the only 2 cars that remain in the family are '32's.

Wow! Thanks very much! Now I understand. Very impressive how you and others have mastered this techno crap that never seems to work for me. I'd like to have that car, looks to be in excellent shape.

Re: Part ID
The spare tire mount for my 40 Woodie looks similar and is FLAT where it bolts to the tailgate.

Re: Part ID
Greetings Everyone. tomcarman your question has provided for us to have an excellent thread, thanks to you and the other contributors.
It was actually a little tougher answer than it might have appeared. To fill out the discussion, here's a picture I took from the wonderful 1935-36 book authored by one of our great members, Don Rogers. It shows three (of the ten available) body styles, from left: Fordor Sedan (nickname slant or flatback), Fordor Touring Sedan (sometimes called trunkback or humpback), and 5-Window Coupe. You can see the slant of the spare tire in relation to the body is different, and that's why there are multiple 1935 spare tire mounts. The second picture doesn't help anything but I like it!

Re: Part ID
So tomcarman …...if DavidG is correct (and he USUALLY is), your part should be the "C" suffix as it appears flat on the back side in your pictures, which seems to equate to a carrier for a Touring Sedan, or the "Humpback Sedan" like the one which appears in the center drawing, and like the big, ugly sedan in the picture I posted above. How's about that for a little bit of simple detective work? Ain't this FordBarn a great place.....or what? DD

Re: Part ID
Thanks to all. Very impressive sluething by members who have the knowledge and resources to identify these old parts. I am admittedly ignorant regarding these things. At the risk of being a nuisance I will undoubtedly exhume other parts as we continue to organize the garage and if so I'll ask again. I especially appreciated the photos and the drawings.

Hey Tom....You just go ahead and ask away. I, for one, enjoy this stuff. It makes me learn stuff, too! Ironically, every lie that I told you in this thread was as a result of info found SOMEWHERE in the FordBarn archives, except for the one picture of that ugly sedan with the flat tire that you liked so much. You're allowed to use our "search" function, too. It's in that black band at the top of every page. So, bring it on! DD |

Re: Part ID
Sheesh, your guys are killing me! LOL. Now it's clear what DavidG meant by A, B and C suffix on the SN. What a wonderful bit of support and followup by knowledgable people. Thanks to all and V8 I'll look into that search bar thing. Who would have thought the intricate differences of something as mundane as a spare tire mount on a 35 Ford? Truthfully I'm lucky Dad put anything on that part to identify it. He was rather remarkable in knowing what the parts were and there are many more to be discovered. Mike (Duece Roadster) has helped us and has seen what we have. To that am grateful.
