1930 Ford A Deluxe with original upholstery
Hello, I'm a Model A beginner. At the moment I look for a car. In Germany it is not so easy to find a good Model A. I like cars with patina - maybe this one has a little bit to much of it. The blurry headlining seems to be the result of rotten woodwork. What do you think of the car? Is it worth an 8 hour trip? The Ford is comparatively cheap. Thank's a lot for your help.

Wellcome to the Barn Freddie !!
That looks like a very nice Sedan .You don't find many with original upholstery . There is a lot of wood in the 4 door sedan so Check out the wood on the subframe and if the doors shut nice that's a good find. John Cochran |

Herzlich willkommen Freddie.
Where is Rosenheim in Germany. Where is the car located located? Maybe you can get a local Model A'er check it out first. It has a different spare tire bracket also. Last edited by Joop; 04-01-2014 at 05:15 PM. |

I would like to own that car.
If it has a new top, then the stains may be from the old one and nothing to worry about. |

Re: 1930 Ford A Deluxe with original upholstery
It certainly looks attractive in the photos. Some things you could do to help you assess the car's structural wood condition is to open the doors a little and lift them up and down to determine if the hinges are loose in the wood. You should also shake the body by pushing sideways on the door posts to see if the body is rigid or not. Look at the windshield frame from the front of the car to make sure the frame fits square and level in the opening. Get permission to open the windshield to make sure its hinge fits tight to the header; while it is open, see if it sags to one side or drags at the bottom. Sometimes the wood can be structurally usable with loose screws where I described and the wood can be repaired in the screw hole areas easily, but don't get your hopes too high. Look along the top to see if the structure under the exterior top material looks uneven or sags. Wood replacement is a major undertaking, and you may or may not enjoy the challenge, if necessary. Can you get a Model A-er to look at the car with you? Keep posting questions. Good luck.

If I was after a nice Fordor, I would certainly travel to see that car.
Look at the wood at floor subframe & check for any up/down movement at all the door hinges where they screw to the pillars. |

Re: 1930 Ford A Deluxe with original upholstery
I thank you so much for all your helpful advice.
Rosenheim is in the south of Germany (Bavaria) and the car is located in the east (Dresden). The Model A'er I know is not very familiar with a Fordor. |

Hi Freddie,
We restore a Briggs Townsedan like the one you show. The wooden structure is visible just now. See webpage in signature. I live in Gmund am Tegernsee, 30 km from Rosenheim. If interested you may visit our workshop. May be I could give some advise. Please send a private message if interested. Michael (I am German)

Of course the car may have hidden faults, however, the tips in the posts above gives good advice how to find out.
If the car is what it looks like, you will probably never find another original car as good as this. Unless it is overpriced it is definately worth the trip in my opinion. |

Re: 1930 Ford A Deluxe with original upholstery
Welcome Freddie,
Just from the pics I saw, the original shades are still in her! That means that hopefully the rest of the interior is still original. That is a VERY good thing. Along with the above tips, when-not if but when-you go see her check out the drive train. Make sure there is no knocking in the engine and that she shifts smoothly. It looks like she has been repainted at some point in her past and the engine may have been opened up. Also, as a side note you are looking at a BRIGGS bodied car and there parts do not interchange with a MURRY bodied car (body wise). Mike
