Shutoff valve to gas tank fit

Restoring a 28 Fordor Leatherback. Getting back to assembly. Just went to install the new shutoff valve and find it is way too small for the tank opening. Does this mean it was modified at some point or was there a different valve used or is there an adapter I'm missing? Unfortunately I cannot find the original valve.... Any help or advice is welcome!

The Fordor used the same tank as all production A cars & trucks. Without seeing the tank outlet and/or the valve, I cannot say what the problem is however there was not any adapters used.

Thank you Brent! I thought that was the case but wanted to check. It appears the tank is threaded as 3/8 instead of 1/4. All I can think is this was the result of some past, quick repair.

Probably 3/8 x 1/4 brass bushings are available.

This sounds like one if you were a "purist" you could thread the bushing in tightly, cut it off level with the ring, and chase the 1/4" thread a little with a tap to clean it up/present the proper fitting engagement. Once the repair was done you would probably never know it. I might use loctite blue on this rather than pipe dope or teflon lest the bushing "screw" into the tank while applying the tap/valve.

Or, a lot to be said for "maintainability." Use a standard bushing even though the valve will be lower and your passenger might hit their knee on it. Most riders would never know what it was, or is. And access to an in-tank strainer would be easier and more repeatable.
