Quick question. Attached is a picture of a Model A engine for sale locally. I asked the owner to send me a picture of the engine numbers but I have not seen anything like it for a Model A. Can anybody shed any light on this engine from the picture?

That pad has machined off at some point, no original numbers. The pad originally was a non machined finish. This one has been machined off. so no original.

I would look at it, might be a replacement diamond block. They got stamped with whatever the installer felt like using....

The original # has clearly been ground off, and very sloppy about it to.

The number looks like "MV 5549-31 MV" with the "MV" close together as in one stamp. I wonder if that means the state used their own stamp for "motor vehicle" department, and the number "31" could have been the state's unique number. California was the 31st state to join the union. This could be the unique number put on the block by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. It would make sense.
Anybody from California recognize this?

I’d bet the farm it’s a state number, although I will say it’s pretty darn sloppy. It was probably because of no title. Here’s my mid 90’s wash number.

All kinds of numbers were applied to Model A and B engines that were used in industrial applications. A lot of the railroad track runners into the 1950's were powered by 4-cylinder Ford engines and the various railroads had their own numbering system to account for them. These are often mistaken for vehicle registration or DMV numbers but these engines never saw a gravel or asphalt road. I have a couple of them myself.
