I agree with the others that say to start low and increase the tonnage just to drop in the cotter. I like to get over 100lb/ft and if the threads start feeling 'spongy' or 'flubbery' [ that term would work for this too wouldn't it, I like that term] it should be able to be felt.
I recently had a 'go-around' with a local Model A 'expert' about this very subject. He was insistent that the rear axle nut be no more than 'snug', his reason being that the key, and not the taper, is what should take the load.
Well, Pat, Fer sure, DON'T ask his advice fur adjusting them frunt wheel bearings, or ANYTHING ELSE!! You'd be better off to ask yo' Dog fur his/her advice! Buster T. (Ol' Bill approved this post)

"The position of the key controls the amount the drum moves toward the backing plate."

Surely you jest.

They're sort of the same, except, "The Castle Nut" has an I.Q. of 19 & entertains the KING. "The Village Idiot has an I.Q. of 7 & entertains the PEONS that cook & work in the courtyard. That was the system in Medievel Castle Life.
Buster T. DELIGHTS in callin' me a "KRANK NUT" I told him it was a bolt, BUT he won't buy that!

'Village Idiots'. Just brings to mind where we go for the winters. Inside Fort Zachary Taylor is an area for the winter volunteers to keep and live in their RVs. This area is called the village and folks that live there are called VI's. I'm not the smartest guy around so it took me quite a while to figure out what that stood for.
