Default Bratton's Model A tubes

Following the advice I received on this board, I ordered the Model A tubes in 19" size with rubber stems from Bratton's.

Today I went to the tire store to have the first 2 tires fitted (I prep and paint one wheel at a time -- slowly), and the tire mounting professional pointed out that the valve stems in the tube are too thick for the hole. He's half correct, as we were able to push the valve stem through about 95%, but it's tighter than I would have expected. Let it be known that I had stripped the rims of all paint and just painted them "normally," so there's no excessive built-up on them. Is that a common problem, something I should ignore, or should I enlarge the valve hole in the rims a bit with a file for the remaining 3 wheels?

Well remember, YOU are the one that is putting the incorrect valve stem in the hole, --Not Brattons.

Ford used metal valve stems that fit the holes in the rims fine. I have mounted 2 sets of tubes and tires with metal valve stems. I cut off the rubber stems of both sets (that hurt) and installed the metal stems. It wasn't as bad a job as I though it would be. The metal stemed tubes fit great and look very nice. If you don't what to go the metal stem route, I guess you could carefully "grind off some of the outside of the rubber stems near the main part of the tubes. If I remember correctly, there was quite a bit of rubber around the metal core in the rubber stem. Hope this helps.

Use a little Vaseline and they'll slip right through.
