Re: Gas gauge gasket disintegrated

I'll have to check that the next time I get the car out of it's garage. You're right, most likely it's the standard gear ratio. It would fit the speed I reached quite well, 50 mph without excessive vibration. It seemed like the engine wanted to go faster but I didn't have enough spark advance left. (but that could've been the first signs of the worn point-lever as well) The drive (with 1 gasket) has very little to no play at the moment. But having the drive cap on too tight should cause noise whenever I'm driving, right? The noise is only present if I have the speedo cable screwed in and going faster than approx. 20 to 25 mph. If I screw the speedo cable off I can drive as fast as the car will go without any problems. On the other hand the added drag from the speedo cable could cause the small gear to slide sideways against the drive housing. If the edges of drive housing and torque tube are not exactly at the same level and there's a small shoulder it could cause such a noise. I'll check that next time! Quote:
Maybe it was just my luck. |

Re: Gas gauge gasket disintegrated
Thank you! As I suspected you cur your own gaskets! A lost art making your own gaskets, an old timer showed me his way of making gaskets tapping the stock on the part with a ball peen hammer!
