Aftermarket Temperature Guage

The car is a 1940 Deluxe Fordor with a 59A engine...

I'm wanting to temporarily install a couple of temperature guages... one for each side of the engine... just to keep an eye on the operating temperatures. I am planning on this being a temporary installation.

I've bought two mechanical guages... but I haven't found a way to run the tubes from the guages to the heads without boring holes through the firewall... I'm not interested in doing that.

I've been looking for a source for 6v electric guages... wires can be run through existing holes in the firewall easily. So far, I've found two sources for 6v guages. Westach sells them, but has a 4 to 6 week lead time... and the early Jeep suppliers also sell 6v guages, but only in 4 or 5 guage kits... which I don't need.

I'm looking for a solution to this issue... any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

On my '38 I was able to get the temp bulbs for the mechanical gauges through the firewall by removing the rubber grommet where the wiring harness goes through, stretch it enough to get the bulbs through, and reinstall.

Since your installation is temporary, you might secure the gauges under the hood until you get the information you want.

if you go electric you only need one gauge with a switch to toggle between the right and left sender. Thats what i did, works great.

I thought about that this morning...

What I should have done to start with was simply replace the factory installed two wire sender with another one wire sender... then wire both to the original guage through a switch to toggle between the two senders... that would have been quick, easy, and effective.

Hindsight... sometimes I tend to overthink things.

I have the two mechanical guages, along with a mounting bracket, so I'll go ahead and use them.
