Steering column drop.
What is the benefit of using a steering column drop?

Re: Steering column drop.
Taking the strain off the tank when you pull yourself into the drivers seat and introducing a leak at the tank

Re: Steering column drop.
The drop attaches to the existing mount so your statement makes no sence.

Re: Steering column drop.
According to the Judging Standards pg 8-3 The lowered steering column was used on the Deluxe Phaeton, Convertible Sedan and Victoria to adapt to their lower body profile.

Anaheim
Agreed. The detached drop attaches to the cowl cross rail not the tank The one built into the tank takes strain of driver grabbing the wheel to enter the car as well as steering. |

I think Chris is asking about the drop used from late 1930 through May 1931. |

Re: Steering column drop.
Has anyone installed this on a 30/31 4-door sedan, and can comment on the comfort of the lower wheel position? I had to push the seat back on my '31 and it seems like a lower steering wheel might make it more comfortable. I suspect I'd have to readjust the steering box in the frame to avoid stress on the column.

Re: Steering column drop.
The spacer in the steering column support is used on the 180A Deluxe Phaeton and the 190A Victoria that have steering column supports attached to the gas tank. The spacer puts the steering column at an angle similar to the typical Model "A". When the steering column support was moved to the dash rail later in 1931, the spacer became obsolete because the support was lengthened to eliminate it in the 180A and 190A.
If you use the spacer to lower the steering column in cars other than the 180A and 190A, it significantly reduces the clearance to the front seat cushion making ingress / egress more difficult. This especially would be difficult for taller folks.

Re: Steering column drop.
I took the spacer out of my Victoria to give me more leg room between the steering wheel and my leg..
