Default Painter's advise bare metal Brookville

Hello, I am looking for advise from painters who have prepped new bare metal Brookville bodies or parts. I have cleaned the bare metal with wax and grease remover. Next I was going to sand and scotch brite before PPG epoxy primer. Do I need to acid wash or etch?

Many of the current types of etch primer already have a mild phosphoric acid in the mix. Ospho is another product that will etch the surface but it is more for mildly corroded steel and structural type steel that needs a good conversion coat before priming. Some of these types of steel never really get a coat of paint. They are just etched & primed then used to construct steel buildings and such.

A good etch primer will work fine if you are concerned about corrosion or will be operating it in a more corrosive environment. If you clean the metal well and it has no signs of corrosion then you can spray it with a good epoxy primer before top coat. Most primers have corrosion inhibitors in them.

I would metal prep it next with a scotch brite pad. Use the latex surgical gloves in all of these processes. You used grease and wax remover so don't add oils from your skin. Wipe it dry with Scott paper towels. They don't leave lint for your primer. I would use the PPG Dp epoxy primer next. Have fun.

Don't forget to do the back side as well. Good insurance.

I've had good results using Ospho on new bare steel followed by DPLF (PPG) epoxy primer. The P-196 tech sheet for DPLF mentions that adhesion is enhanced by a conversion coating which I believe the Ospho provides.

I've used a lot of metal prep and shot a couple of gallons of DPLF onto two different cars. Pay special attention to getting into the sharp transitions from flat panel to body reveals and inside of stamped areas to sand or scuff and clean before the primer goes down.

On my Brookville body we first used etching wash primer compatible with DP epoxy.

A couple of notes.

Avoid using any self-etching primers on fiberglass or other parts or on top of other primers or fillers, as there is no metal contact the acid is not neutralized and can cause problems on later top coats.

If you have not assembled the body yet make some sort of corrosion treatment BEFORE assembly in areas where ever you will not be able to access after things are put together. On that line be sure that there are drain holes in the bottoms of the doors and any low areas of the floor pan.

Latex may not be the best choice for gloves, some people develop allergies.

And of course the absolute basic. Fit everything before you finish coat or send things to the chrome plater. A simple fix is not simple when it ruins a paint job.

Karl has good advice about fit. I had to do metal work to get trunk lid to fit. I also had to pullthe door b pilar in to make the passenger door fit. You need to bolt it on the frame with wood blocks and shims and get everything fitted before paint.

Here is excellent fitting tutorial. http://www.abarnyard.com/workshop/door-2.htm

Read the directions on your primer. Some self etching primers do NOT want you to pre etch the bare metal
