Brake Energizer Question
I put Flathead Teds energizers on my 36 that has original mechanical brakes. I took the car for a first ride today. After braking, the brakes continue to seem to be engaged, the do not release (in my opinion). The car will not roll freely even on an incline, when my foot is off the brake pedal. I can get the brakes to release if I put the car in reverse and step on the brakes. Then the car rolls freely. Full disclosure; I installed the energizers without the reinstalling the top spring, as I recall the instructions specified. I have not yet had time to pull the brake drums yet to inspect them. I was hoping the subject matter experts here on the Barn might have the answer. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Re: Brake Energizer Question
Thank you Jack & Coop. Unfortunately when I try sending Ted a personal message I get the error:
“ FlatheadTed has exceeded their stored private messages quota and cannot accept further messages until they clear some space.” I’m sure Ted is a popular guy and receives a lot of messages. If anyone has had a similar experience to mine with the mechanical brakes with energizers, I’d like to know how you corrected it. Thanks! |

Terry P.S. Looking at the conversion, I can't see how it will work without the top return spring between the shoes, but maybe I'm missing something.

The only thought that I have is - WHY WOULD SOMEONE REFRAIN FROM FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS IN THEIR ENTIRETY, AND THEN COME HERE ASKING FOR HELP? Did you ever think that the deleted spring(s) MIGHT possibly help in retracting those brake shoes away from rubbing on the drum? Coop . |

Re: Brake Energizer Question
Thanks Coop. I read the instructions and I followed the instructions as I understood them. The instructions state “do not replace the long top spring”.
Ted, I’m not saying the product is defective, I am asking if anyone else experienced this issue that can share the resolution. I’m not saying there is no chance that I erred in the install. That’s why I’m asking the question. |

Re: Brake Energizer Question
Kube, did you reinstall the top spring as part of the install of the energizers? it is currently in place?

Re: Brake Energizer Question
Thank you Kube.
Joevy You can have the spring on or off ,it works .You might have your pedal to tight back the rod in the battery box off so the pedal goes down a 1/4 , Last edited by FlatheadTed; 08-04-2023 at 06:43 PM. |
