Default leaky rear main on 59A

I have a 59 A in a 40 Ford. Motor was rebuilt probably 1,000 ago. Rear main has been leaking from day one. Question is has anyone had any luck repairing this problem with engine in car? I know it is a piece of sh*t rope seal and they are a pain. Is there a 2 piece seal for the later flathead bit not the 59A? Is this a common issue with these pre 49 engines?

Not impossible, but very difficult to do a rear seal replacement with the crankshaft in place. Could be done if you pulled the transmission back. Dropped the pan, undid the main caps and dropped the crankshaft down, etc. But I would think it would be much easier to just pull the engine.
