Default Shock question for Bill W

The right rear shock on my 39 works good one direction, but has little resistance the other direction. Is there a way to get the check valve to open by spraying a cleaner or something in the reservoir to clean it?
Thanks

Planojc:

To start with is it full of oil ?
2nd you should have more resistance in down stroke then the up.
Does the shock have a adjuster on it?
What sticks the check valves is Rust or thickened oil
The latter can be caused by adding the incorrect oil.
there is no way to tell what was added over the years.
As far as a miracle wash to clean these valves with out disassembly I have not yet to find ( It would sure make my job a lot simpler )
