Gas tank sender unit gasket
On a dust off ride on Sunday, my tank gauge read empty with a full tank so on return I removed the sending unit and found the float full of gas. I tested the gauge and it works OK. A new float and gasket are on the way from Joe's but I want to be sure I reinstall the sending unit and gasket back on the tank correctly. My question is should I put the gasket on dry or use a sealer like the gas-resistant Seal All? The sealer makes sense but is there a reason to put it on dry? Thanks for your help.

Re: Gas tank sender unit gasket
If I were you I'd put it on with some sort of liquid sealant.

Re: Gas tank sender unit gasket
Look at the sealer that says for gasoline. Yellow tube last I bought was from auto zone.

Re: Gas tank sender unit gasket
The sender unit screw hole spacing is such that it will only install in one position to be sure the float is pointing in the correct direction. Sealant can be used, but be sure it is good for gasoline.

This sealer works. Not cheap.

Re: Gas tank sender unit gasket
I've had mine off several times, the first time I used the cork gasket, after laying around for a couple of days it deformed, I have switched to the rubber one that I believe came from C&G, been opened up several times and put back together with no problems.

Re: Gas tank sender unit gasket
Easy to make your own gasket cut from the cardboard backing from note pads. Use 2.

Re: Gas tank sender unit gasket
My 52 F1 leaked with the rubber gasket. I switched to cork and it still leaked. With gas tank in cab you can imagine the smell.
I took it apart, put Seal-all (recommended here by a fellow Barner) both sides of gasket and no more leak, no more stink

Re: Gas tank sender unit gasket
With all the sealer just be sure the sender ring is still grounded to the tank. The screws should ground it through the sealer, but just be sure it can conduct.

Re: Gas tank sender unit gasket
J: To be grounded beyond belief I run a separate wire from the tank to the frame.

Re: Gas tank sender unit gasket
19Fordy, good point on the ground to frame. I've got the Seal All. I'll fit it all together tomorrow and run a ground from one of the screws to the frame.
