34 roadster or coupe sound insulation

The OEM sound insulation spray was done on the inner door on the roadster. BUT on a roadster is it OEM for the insulation on the inner portion of the rear quarter? If on inner quarter I assume the entire into the trunk area or just the portion adjacent to the front seat
I assume a coupe rear quarter is the same?

It seems eastwood has a spray on that looks OEM ..any other source for OEM appearance correct???

Hi Ed, I know you are more finicky than I. I put this stick on insulation in my 34 between the doors framing and rear area as shown and I believe between the kick panels. Now my doors sound like a Lincoln when I shut them. When I drive I only hear the sweet sound of the Flathead V-8 and transmission. The insulation is a jute that is sandwiched between 2 pieces of foil. Drake and Mac's have this type of insulation and it's relativity inexpensive compared to others.

It has been so many years, but as I remember taking my '34 roadster apart only the doors had sprayed undercoat. Not the 1/4 panels. At the time, I didn't realize this was factory undercoating.

On my roadster I stuffed the doors full of high density foam rubber, made them really solid!!!

The "undercoating" on the inside of the doors is to support the sheet metal so it doesn't "oilcan" when the door is closed. Trying to get doors to close easily usually requires that the door fits its frame evenly. Worn hinge pins, or bent or misaligned hinges make door closing difficult as the strike and dovetail must be in good condition, and the threaded plate behind the door opening must be secure.

mfagan, i would be afraid your high density foam is also making a high humidity area that will eventually rust out your expensive roadster doors even in dry texas. foam will hold moisture

If you use the closed cell foam it will not hold moisture.

I'm not a restorer but I've used lots of Dynamat in my cars with good results. Is it not acceptable for use in restored cars? My deuce pu doors sound as solid as my new Silverado with Dynamat installed in them and my deuce 5 window is solid mat inside, after it's upholstered it will be quiet.

I used a roll of foiled backed closed cell foam I got on-line. I glued it in with spray adhesive and it worked great. I did Fordor and had a lot left over. About $135.00 for 200sf if I remember right. Advertised as it would not hold moisture....... Mark

closed cell will take on moisture too. thats why they spray tar over it when used to insulate your basement

when I took my 29 roadster doors apart they had some type of insulation in them , but I do not know what it was. I can only tell you that it had to be put in there before the inner and outer door parts were joined together. I destroyed the stuff trying to get it out of the round holes on the inner structure. I too that stuff out about 10 years ago. the project has been on hold that long, but my brother and I have started working on it again, so I will have to make a decision as what to put back in there. I am glad this thread has come along when it did. any one know what the original stuff was? any ideas what would be good for a roadster? remember open car with no roof, or top planned.

Ed, I know you are looking for the factory type , unlike the alternatives that have been suggested. It was more of a tar type undercoating and was also used in 35 and 36 roadster and phaetons. I will email you some pictures directly tomorrow of the insides of some of my doors.

Just a word on exact OEM. Putting sound deadner sp. in the doors and areas that will never be seen till the next person rips the car apart again. Should we not use plastic body fill and use lead instead? Will have it 's benefits that wasn't affordable or invented yesteryear! Do we restore are cars today with rubber parts in the fuel system (so they can blow up in size with ethanol) or use neoprene? Do we still use non detergent oils and paraffin grease etc. etc.! As my fellow car enthusiast once said do we put Dearborn air in our tires as well.

I was thinking the same thing. Once the deadener is in the panel and covered by upholstery no body knows if it's original or not. Use modern materials that are far superior to what was used when these cars were built.. Those of us that have judged cars at meets do not tear off upholstery to make sure that someone used the correct sound deadening material!

The closest stuff I have used is 3M Body Schutz part number 08864. Buy the 3M gun applicator as it gives you just the right look.
