CCP steering box kit
Anyone experienced installing a steering box rebuild kit from CCP? I purchased one for my '49 F1 box. The kit came with a new steering shaft with worm gear installed. I thought this would be pretty good not to have to press a worm gear off and on. Turns out the new steering shaft is bent right out of the box. When I get the adjusting nut tightened so there is no slop, the shaft will turn a bit then bind. Took the shaft back out and rolled it. Bent right on the very end just above the worm gear. Not very happy right now Purchased the kit through Macs.

Or it could be straightened out. Obviously a fault of the manufacturer and not Mac's. |

Re: CCP steering box kit
Had one once that was similar (but not from a kit).
It was placed in a large lathe with a 3/4" tapered chuck and a suitable bar was placed in side to bend. There are other ways to bend it. But submit your problem to Mac's first.

Re: CCP steering box kit
If the shaft was OEM and had the old worm replaced, the bend may have happened when the worm was pressed on. There are several ways to do the press work and any of them can result in a bent shaft if care is not taken by the worm gear installer. This has to be made right by the party that sold it to you. Let them worry about who bent the shaft. If you have to send your old one in for a core, I would get them to repair it as long as they don't ruin it too.

I will address the problem with Macs. I know its not their fault. Just sucks that this day in age stuff has to be like that. Can put a robot on Mars but I can't get a straight stupid steering shaft... What

You say "When I get the adjusting nut tightened so there is no slop, the shaft will turn a bit then bind." What procedure are you using to adjust the sector? The sector to worm lash needs to be adjusted in the neutral postion. If it is adjusted off of center, you will feel binding, as the worm is ground to get tighter in the center and have increasing clearance either way off center. As far as the shaft, it is not uncommon for these steering shafts to be slightly bent, but I have never experienced binding from a slight bend. With the shaft in the steering box and the box clamped in a vice, you can usually gently push on the end of the shaft and easily straighten a bend, if it is right past the worm. I just installed a new 56 F100 shaft and worm from C&G last night and had to give it a little nudge to true it up. Neal |
