the wood. If it don't go in the recess that can be a problem also.

GM, What you describe would hinder the return of the pedal - not cause too much free play.
My gut still tells me the issue the original poster has is wear in numerous pivot places.

I believe the 1940 adjustment rod 40-7521-A is 4 11/64" long from the C/L of the hole.

If the linkage still has thread and you can't turn it maybe easer to remove floor and take off and free up then put the floor back in then adjust pedal. The up position hits the bottom of floor is the start of your adjustment.

Terry, you may be onto something that I never knew!! The book shows 40-48 uses a 40-7521 not the 48-7521 like I previously stated. Sorry posting incorrect information.

No the wood limits the working length the clutch operates in and
is very hard to adjust making the clutch very touchy. G.M.

GM, I agree in part. However, the original poster has an issue with way too much free play. That issue would not be from the "floor boards".

I finally got to the clutch adjustment problem where I couldn't turn the clevis to get correct freeplay because the frame is in the way. I took out the clevis pin at the adjusting end, the two bolts holding the clutch shaft to the frame and the pin holding the clutch shaft to the short piece coming out of the housing. This allowed me to slide part 7503 off the clutch shaft that goes into the housing and moved it so I could remove it for checking, cleaning and greasing. It was relatively easy then to turn the clevis, lengthening it, actually too much at first, then to the correct freeplay. Problem solved and thanks again for all the help. Working on brakes now, learning a lot as I go...

Just a comfirmation please:
Lenghten the rod to reduce Clutch free play to get the required 1 to 1.5 inch free play correct? As opposed to shortening the rod lenght?
Thanks

Yes, that's correct, lengthen to get more freeplay.
