3 speed trans question
Being the 3 speed in my '49 F1 is the first one I have ever driven, is 1st gear supposed to be synchronized like 2nd and 3rd? I had the trans opened up and soaked it in a tank of kero to clean it out. Nothing jumped out at me as being wrong on inspection.
Thanks, Chris |

Re: 3 speed trans question
I must admit the I am not an expert on truck transmissions of that period but I would assume that they would have synchro first to second but not back from second to first. Anyone care to back me up here (or tell me I am wrong)?

Re: 3 speed trans question
No syncro going into reverse either. The first/reverse slide gear and the gears it meshes with usually take a beating because of this.

Re: 3 speed trans question
Just to be clear, second and third are synchronized--- there is no "between" synchronization.
And a side note, when you're stopped or nearly stopped you can cheat a little by quickly shifting into second before first. |

Re: 3 speed trans question
I thought I remembered that trick from many years ago too.

Re: 3 speed trans question
Same guts as the 42 through 48 Ford pickups. Only intermediate & high gear synchronization. Slowing the cluster by down shifting into intermediate does help. Double clutching also helps during down shifts. The other good alternative is to let the truck come to a complete stop before engaging low gear.

Providing you leave the shift lever in either 2nd or 3rd until completely stopped ... and do not linger in neutral, clutch in or out, for too long. If you do, "stop" the transmission by shifting to second or third then smoothly back to 1st. Guys have been grinding transmissions for years without knowing why they're chewing up the gears. Love the ones who back up then grind going into 1st every time.
