I have a SW electric oil gauge on the 60hp engine. It shows about 45 psi most of the time, idle or faster rpm. When I shut the engine off, it still will show about the same psi reading. If I take the sender wire off, the gauge will drop to zero. Start the engine and it returns to 45, and stays almost there when I shut off the engine again. I am thinking sender is faulty, since when the wire is taken off, it goes to zero. Suggestions?

my mechanical when off is 0 at idle its about 18/20 i don't like electrical gauges. if your concerned i would change over,

very easy. if your showing 45 at idle either your idle is 2,000RPM. or your useing straight 50 oil oil pressure is nothing to fool with, i'd change over.

Thanks for the link Bill, but it is no longer in service. Can't see it being normal operation with the engine dead and still showing as much pressure as if it were running. Still shows same pressure after sitting over night.
Jan, I doubt if the pressure is really 45 at idle. That is when the gauge is not dropping down after stopping and restarting. After I cleared the sender and gauge reads zero, then restart, I get about 20 lbs. Mechanical may be the way to go. Could be the wrong sender, but there are no numbers on it to go by.

I have used electric oil pressure gauges in the past and they sure didn't work like you describe. Either the gauge or the sender is faulty.

I was thinking more about how the gauge was responding; needle staying at the reading when shut off, etc., and the fact that the pressure reading was staying constant didn't register. Of course the pressure moves up and down normally with temperature and RPM so it sounds like a sensor problem. The link has testing procedures.
