Default Help with 1937 60hp

I have a 60hp that I need some timing help with. I got this engine/car, when my daughters husband lost his bout with cancer. I do not know what distributor this my be or how to time it for sure. I do know when the piston is at tdc, the right hand (pass side) points are just starting to open, and the mark on the pulley is almost centered on the pointer. It does not have a condenser. Surely it needs one.?.
Any pointers you can give will help. I will attempt to include a picture of the distributor.
Thanks, Lee

Nice looking engine. Yes you need a condensor. That distributor is a 1942 model. The timing is done with the distributor off the engine. You need a timing fixture or a Sun machine. By loosening that screw on the side of the distributor, the breaker plate can be moved to adjust initial timing. I see two wires going to the distributor, but can't see what they are connected to.

Your picture shows 2 wires coming off the condensor connection post, where do they go? Normally only the condensor lug only goes there.

The ignition wire from the coil is also mounted to that post.

Ya, I sort of phrased that wrong. I'm only questioning that extra red wire.

One wire goes to the coil. The other goes nowhere, yet. All of the wires from the engine were never hooked up. I am assuming the spare red wire may go to the tach. That one I am not really sure about either.
Thanks, Lee

Thats possible to the tac. But there should be a cond there. Also my eyes tell me he's got about the cheapest set of points he could by in there. [cheap ones come with a sheet metal screw holding the point spring straps] Good points have a machine screw there. And i would get rid of those red plastic plug wires too.Its too bad , its a nice looking engine he put some junk parts in there.Set index plate on the middle line and you should be in time. ken ct. As long as the tounge is in correctly.Back out vacume plunger almost all the way out [gently with fingers] and tighten 1/2" lock nut.

Funny you should mention the plug wires. I was looking for at new ones last night. Didn't think about the screws on the points.
Thanks, Lee

Just so there's no confusion, it's worth mentioning that the distributor is a later unit, and has 2 bolt fitting. It is mounted on a 3 to 2 bolt adaptor plate. It's a popular setup, I have ran this set up on two of my engines.

The condenser may be fitted to the other end of the wire that goes to the coil. On my 40 I had the coil on the inner fender and the condenser mounted there too.

Mart.

3/4,
For the cost of shipping and a condenser I'll go thru your dist
test it and send it back to you ready to install. No big deal.

Charlie ny...Amazing! You've come across AGAIN as the DECENT, helpful individual that you always have, much un-like some that can only point-out the "cheap" and "junk" that a poster has "put" on his stuff. In addition, the OP clearly stated that the engine was in the condition he received it from a deceased loved-one, no less. Charlie ny...YOU, sir, are a class act! DD

I have not a problem with what Ken wrote, as I am ignorant about what I have and what it needs. By the way, what year would this distributor be? Charlie, I just may take you up on your offer! Send me an email with your address, etc, and I will get-er-done. Feel free to replace anything that it needs. I want as little problem with parts as possible.
Thanks for the responses, Lee
By the by, this is a 3/4 scale 32 roadster this engine is in.

Here is the dist. taken off for shipment to Charlie. Do the numbers 35513 on the back mean anything?

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice on my distributor, and a special Thanks You to Charlie for his help and expertise. Getting ready to install it, and make up the new plug wires. Have to go into the hospital in the am, so it will be a couple of days before I can really see if the ole 60 will run.
