For my 34, suggestions for headers and dual exhaust?
Just finished putting juice brakes on my 34. Its great just to have the peace of mind for driving.
I like all stock configurations, but considering doing headers, and dual exhaust, due to the nagging slight exhaust leaks with the cast iron exhaust manifolds. any suggestions for some bolt on stuff from engine to tail? Prefer not to take it to a muffler shop, any good/bad about Fenton and/or Reds? Also prefer to keep the stock sound. Any and all comments/suggestions welcome. Thanks. |

you will need to consider your batterie when doing duals for clearance of the pipe. I built a small batt box to accept a group 35 batterie like you might see in a small honda. My 34 is 12v. The curve around the steering is a challenge and as far as I know no one makes it. Had mine done at a shop. Ken

Re: For my 34, suggestions for headers and dual exhaust?
I have had a set of Fenton's on my '51 for 33 years. Never a hint of a problem. When I changed engines 3 years ago, I inspected the entire exhaust system and found it too be in excellent shape.
I don't know about fitment on a '34, but Fenton's aren't supposed to work on shoeboxes, but we got 'em in. |

Re: For my 34, suggestions for headers and dual exhaust?
For a standard stocking item, I'd recommend Red's Headers - they are quite similar to the good ole' Belond headers I used to run when I was a kid. One thing I highly recommend is to buy them in bare steel or stainless and have a good TIG welder modify them to add 3/8" thick 2-bolt flanges to the ends of them. This makes it possible to BOLT on the pipe extensions that go to your mufflers. Makes taking the headers OFF - really easy.
If you don't do this, than most folks end up with a goofy "slip fit" type of connection (usually with u-bolts to crimp them on). When you use the slip-fit approach, it makes it really difficult to get the headers back off - versus just having a 2-bolt flange and and the same gasket used against the block. Also, most the slip-fit examples I've seen will leak exhaust at this location - which annoys me. If you really crimp down the u-bolts, just TRY to get everything back off at a later date - what a nightmare! Also, I modify the exits on the headers to direct the outlets where I want them - as it seems everybody somehow manages to point the Driver's side in a place where I don't want it. So, I usually buy mandrel u-bends and graft onto the ends of the headers in a way that gives me much better exit points - along with my 2-bolt flanges. Once all of this is done, then I have them ceramic coated. I realize this all sounds like one big pain in the butt - but I assure you it is worth the additional work, associated parts and costs. I've yet to see anybody make a header similar to Red's (Belonds) with these sorts of additional features . . . seems everybody copied the original Belond style. Makes no sense to me - but that is the way it is. Here are the typical headers you get from Red's - notice there are no flanges - use your imagination as to what happens from here to the tailpipe - not good! Reds-Headers.jpg Here are my custom made ones with the turn-downs, flanges and also O2 and EGT bungs (which I use for tuning) - I show how they exit next to the frame on the passenger side: 2017-04-23 14.42.21 copy.jpg 2017-03-26 15.01.00 copy.jpg |
