Little Help with the Ignation wiring
I am building a Tudor 1931 with a mix of parts. I bought a rolling chassis and
motor. I am trying to fire her up and check for oil leaks and general running. I have a question on the Wire diagram .From the junction box to the coil should be hooked to the --negative side? from there Positive side to Ignition switch.Other side to the Dizzy. included in the parts was a Ballast Resistor and what I have read with a 12 volt system you need a ballast Resistor in that case where should it be installed if in fact that I need one. Thanks for your help!! |

Re: Little Help with the Ignation wiring
Are you planning to wire the car with 6 volts or 12 volts?
Positive ground (as original) or negative ground? Answer these 2 questions and I can help you wire it up correctly. .

Notice the drawing does not show positive or negative. It only show a ground. So since you are using 12 volt (voltage makes no difference) negative ground lets follow the drawing. Positive of the battery goes to the starter connection and on to the #5 of the junction box. The #5 terminal goes to the ammeter and back to the terminal labeled 8 on the junction box. From #8 the positive goes to the + or alt marked on the coil. Depending on the coil the other side (neg) goes to the switch. I say depending because you can get internal ballast coil or external ballast coil. Out of the switch to lower plate then upper plate, the points and then to ground and the negative of the battery.

Because you are running positive ground, the positive post of the coil must connect to the wire that runs to the key switch and then down to the points. That is the important detail. The points provide the ground to the coil, so positive ground means connect wire from points to positive coil post. Simple. .

Re: Little Help with the Ignation wiring
Thanks fellas for all your input very helpful. There was one more thing that I noticed
was that they had a capacitor hooked on junction box the side going to the coil. |

No reason for a cap at the JB. Toss it.
