X2.

Never had a problem in 50+years of installing new rings in all sorts of engines. No matter the engine or make of ring, you have to gap them!!!!! (and lube them)

Ian, I have never re-built a motor befor so just asking if you are placing the ring in the cyl without the piston and checking the gap. Then what is the lube you use.
Thanks for the input Ian

General I put the piston in and slide the ring down to it dry. The piston is in the hole so you have the ring square to the hole.

I push the ring into the bore using the top or bottom of the piston depending which is more square. Then use feeler gauges to check the gap. I have a collection of various carborundum slip stones which are usually sufficient to open the gaps.

I will probably be shouted down on this, but I flood regular engine oil into the rings and on the cylinder walls as I slide the pistons into the bores.

I like to use STP for an assembly lube. STP has a gripping and staying ability. This was explained to me by someone more knowledgable than I. Especially if the engine is not to be used for a while.
