Tighten up 37 brakes
Is there anything special I need to know, or any tips for tightening up the brakes on my ‘37? The pedal almost touches the firewall when I stop. This seems a little sketchy to me.

Re: Tighten up 37 brakes
Mark, is your 37 wearing the original brake system, or has it been converted to hydraulics.? Experts on this site will be able to help further based on your answer.

Re: Tighten up 37 brakes
If the brakes were adjusted the proper way in the beginning it is my understanding that from now on you should NOT turn the adjusters on the backing plates anymore.
You should just shower each cable from now on. I always jack up the rear, adjust each cable until the shoes start to drag against the drum when you turn each wheel. Next put the car back down and drive it so you can slam on the brakes and see which rear brake slides the wheel. Adjust accordingly. Now with the rear brakes disconnected adjust the front and drive the car to see which way the brakes pull. Adjust so they don’t pull to one side and reconnect the rears. Because it can be frustrating to get them to work satisfactory is a big reason so many have been converted to hydraulic. If you leave them adjusted so you get a lot of brake action on the rear and very little on the fronts you risk having the car go sideways in a a fast panic stop. |

Re: Tighten up 37 brakes
I have posted on here before regarding the adjustment of cable brakes. I am assuming that all the shoes, springs, wedges and rollers are good and that the cables are lubed with white grease. Once the cables are adjusted, I leave them be and pull down on the center of the cable to see that the rears are the same and that the fronts are the same. Then I pull back the emergency brake back two notches, jack up a wheel until it clears the ground (floor), tighten the adjuster on the backing place until you can just turn the wheel, then release the emergency brake and see if the wheel turns. Repeat this procedure on the remaining wheels. Then road test. But caveat - your cables may need to shortened to the point they pull down equally at the front and equally at the rear. Once you get the cables adjusted, then follow the procedure with the backing plate adjuster described above. I have used this procedure since 1950 and the brakes work very well. The adjusters move the shoes out to the drums.

Re: Tighten up 37 brakes
I'm running the stock mechanical brakes. The individual drums seem to be adjusted fine. I just need to tighten the cables going to the drums and I don't know if there are any tips for doing this. I know that back in the day you could use a K.R. Wilson SV-207 Cable Adjuster. These days those are hard to come by.

Re: Tighten up 37 brakes
The procedure to adjust the cables without the KRW tool is documented in the V-14 1937 and 1938 Engine and Chassis Repair Manual.
