Trans Installation

Another probably easy question for a 1938 trans install.

Once the trans is installed and the torque tube attached.

Is it easier to put the shifter in, or remove the top cover install the shifter then reinstall the top cover, shifter and all?

The reason I ask is, we pulled the shifter to start removal then wanted to put the trans in neutral and had a hard time getting the shifter back in to do so.

It is easy to put the shifter in without removing the top cover, just align the two shift rails to the neutral location using a large flat blade screwdriver, as shown in the attached picture. Then install the shift lever and the anti rotation pin and screw the collar down to secure the lever.

Out of curiosity, the transmission case in your '38 should have been a 78 series case 1937-1939. You were wanting the '39 synchronizer. You had the earlier style synchronizer in your '38 transmission, correct? I'm asking just for learning purposes. Do you have a photo of your '38 synchronizer?

Hello Seth, I don't have a photo. It is/was a 78 case with dual synchronizer rings. I thought the '38s had a single sync ring. So was it rebuilt at some point in the past? I'm not sure.

Regardless, it needed to be replaced/rebuilt. It was difficult to get into 2nd gear and would frequently jump out of 2nd when de-accelerating.

Thanks for the replies, we got it in. Just need to reinstall the interior bits and take it for a test ride.
