Default would i be better off modifying this part

On my 47 Ford coupe (which has a Merc frame) I took off the steering box mounting plate to move it back, and the frame at that point is taller then the plate by about 5/8". Is finding the Ford steering box plate a common enough of a part or would modifying be a better bet.

Probably quicker to modify what you have if it will work properly. Or, make a paper pattern and have one water jet cut.

Won't you also need to move the front cross member back also?

thought the Merc frame was longer from the firewall on, so the front axle is going to be further away as well How about the sheet metal Hood fenders,??????

The MAIN frame rails are different. The two rails are 4" longer on the Merc frame than the Ford rails, as can be seen in the drawings below. The picture below of a Merc frame and front axle explains a lot. Check out all of the special Merc brackets, like to relocate the wishbone ball, and to move the engine mounts rearward. Click on this link for a full thread that I did a lot of leg work in for Topher 5150. Note posts #4, 9 and 17. DD

Sheet metal may fit, but looks like your wheels are too far fwd in fenders.

Topher 5150. I saw from a different thread that you had a 41 sedan trunk lid for sale. If its still available, email me at [email protected] and we can discuss terms.

Agreed. Something major is going on with the front end of that car.
