51504bat,
The process is fairly simple. But like anything it can take practice and lots of patience.
Finding sugar maple trees is the key if they are close by. Sap quality and quantity are the best. Other maples can produce sap too. but the sugar maple or hard maple is the work horse on the industry.
Ok, so you need to try this syrup making again also. Your dad would be happy!
Good fresh maple sap cooked to 218 degrees F should make good maple syrup. Plan to start tapping your trees about early February. Let me know if I can help. A good forum for info is www.mapletrader.com
Regards,
Chris

Chris,
Thanks for the maple syrup lesson but no sugar maples here in SoCal.
According to the weather reports it looks like you should be getting some more snow. Stay dry and warm.

Chris, we have “ Maple Syrup Sunday” here in Maine. I think it’s the third Sunday of March. There must be six or eight producers with in a half hour of me. You have to get there early or you could wait an hour in line. Im happy the farmers do such a business. Good income after a long winter…….. Mark

Tim, Mark,
Yes trouble making maple syrup in SoCal! Mark will do fine in Maine. Folks like the Maple weekends or Sundays!
Warming slowly from the morning in tree stands at 30 degrees. First day of rifle season for deer in PA.
Regards,
Chris

Folks,
Thanksgiving was very good here with lots of family and great food.
More baby first step pictures! Adam and Lexy take the ragged ol' truck out for a drive. Harrasing the neighbors with the horn!

We spent some quality time in the deer stands this afternoon. Had deer all over around us. Same group of does and even a buck in there too. Dad and son (Adam) bonding! Priceless!

Various methods to capture the Wiley White-tail.

Doesn't get much better than this!

Chris

Chris that old '32 has come a long way. She looks great with headlights on and AHOOGA all the way!!! Will you dress her up in any Christmas spirit ?? You mentioned thinking about some signs for future wood sideboards, maybe "SUGARMAKER & COMPANY" ??
Boy what a great job you have done and now she gets to set in that warm new shop.

Not to post a non-ford barn post on this thread. hahaha.

I don't control the boil and I might consider that the heat is too high due to some impatience. It does turn out well and the syrup is very tasty.

Just received some experimental family moose jerky. First batch was very good.

Sorry about the hippie comment. I didn't know it had bad connotations. I suppose the stereo type of the word sets some off. It's not a drug thing.

Think that is common with captive bees now. Or maybe that is normal. Looking into doing it.

Cool stuff dude!

Al,
The side boards might have the hobby business name on some planks. Hadn't thought about Christmas lights on it? I have a hard time just getting a tree up! I'm serious, not a Scrooge, just not in my DNA?? Yes both Ford trucks in the shop, and they are not complaining. Must call fuel company to get propane topped off too. I think we need a couple pictures of your 33 post too. May get me in the mood to do something too!

Tinker, if anybody goes off topic it sure is me in my Ford Barn thread. Its fair game for just about anything other than politics and religion.
You cant have the heat too high when boiling syrup. But you can get the sap too low then you have serious problems. Also as you know the temp is important to watch as you approach finished syrup.
Never had moose jerky yet. Sounds yummy!
I liked having the bees in the yard. They make good neighbors and dont bother anyone unless you poke them with a stick. If I cant help let me know. Spring is the time to get your bees going.
All good!
Regards,
Chris

Off topic is fine by me.
I've dabbled in making maple syrup a bit. Nothing compared to what you're doing. Nothing better than a big inhale of the steam coming off the evaporator.
My parents operated a beekeeper's supply business for years manufacturing all the wood components of the hive. I spent countless hours at the shaper rounding the edges of frame end bars. My mom at 92 stills has customers come by to rent extractors or buy honey. Good stuff.

KDL, Folks,
I would encourage anyone to get into bees, (unless they are allergic to stings, You will get stung) they do most of the work and you get the awesome honey! Having some fantastic goldenrod honey on toasted, buttered, Italian bread. Yum!
Regards,
Chris

Folks,
Couple questions. Takling to a friend that is pretty knowledgeable on model a type machines. I mentioned that the grill shell is black on this 32 commercial truck. Does that make sense rather than the Washington blue as the rest of the cab?

Cant remember the other thing on the truck?? Getting old!

This morning I asked Rhett if he wanted to wait for the bus in the 32? He jumped at it so we got to spend some quality time in the truck,. showing him all the features. He was surprised it had glass in the door windows he had never seen them up! He also loves the horn sound! Didn't get any pictures but I think the kids on the bus got a treat too.

Regards,
Chris

Chris,

The horn gives back the truck's personality separating it from all of the anemic "beeps" out there.

Regarding the truck's grill shell, if it is truly black (hard to be sure in the photos given the aging of the paint elsewhere as well), it likely did not leave the assembly plant painted black unless the original buyer was a fleet as fleets had paint options available to them depending on the size of the fleet. In the case of your truck, that seems highly likely given that Washington blue was not a standard color offering for '32 commercial vehicles and big trucks.

I have not heard goldenrod honey mentioned in over 60 years. My grandfather allways kept bees, and that was his favorite. He would keep it separate from the other sources.
I liked peach blossom best. Either one was good on grandma's biscuits.

David,

Yes! We don't have any other Ah-ooog-ah horns in the neighbor hood! Makes a wonderful statement.
The 32 truck grill is for sure black. Your right the pictures and age of the paint dont show that well:

But I have no history on the original owners of the truck other than hints from the previous owner that this truck "may" have came from a township or municipality prior to his uncle buying it for his local water well drilling business.
That's about all I know about its life from 32' to 52'. I would love to have more of the story.
Only other thing is the dump bed was removed and placed on a 48 Ford which may have been used after this 32 was retired and stored?

Bruce,
We have lots of awesome goldenrod honey if you need any. Daughter Kelly is the beekeeper now. Goldenrod honey is usually our biggest crop of honey. As it grows very well in our area. Fields and fields of it! I have never had peach blossom. Would trade you some??

Worked in the shop loft, coffee breaks, visiting, naps, and deer hunting today. Hope things are good in Ford land! Thanks for checking in on me.
Regards,
Chris

Folks,
Way off Ford topic!
Harvested a nice PA buck today. 9 point, 15.5 inside spread, 190 lb field dressed, 240 lb. live weight. Always a good day when you can get on of these whitetails on the ground. Son, Eric came over and helped me get it quartered and cooling. Not sure you want pictures but I do have them!

Regards,
Chris

Personally not a hunter but no problem with those who hunt for the meat. More deer are killed in PA by cars than hunters, IIRC. My BIL makes Elk jerky and I'm guessing deer jerky would be tasty as well!

Ford Folks,
Again same off topic continued, sorry I have a off topic problem:

Cheryl on right and her sister Martha making venison burger, The shop has become a multi-functional and comfortable place for projects:

Son Eric and his dog Sadie, and Grandson Mike helped with the deer processing:

I will make about 10 lbs of a venison Kielbasi. A tradition that we have made for 30 years. Great snack with a Ritz cracker, sharp cheese, the kielbasi, and maple BBQ.

Off to see the wizard! Hope things are good in Ford land!

Regards,
Chris
