make sure your 8CM is 1951-53, the hole at the rear of the crankshaft on a 49-50 is not large enough for the front hub of the torque converter on an automatic trans

The C-4 is a lighter, more efficient trans than a Fordo/Merco. The offset is you have to get an adapter for the C-4. Flat-O-Matic may have the situation with the small crank hole remedied though.

You can use an AOD with a Speedway Adaptor Kit which includes all that you will need in addition to that transmission. I bought a used adaptor kit on EBay. An AOD is a reasonably easy install with good results. The pre Electronic AOD is the one you want and if your rear end ratio is high, you should put in a Transgo Valve Kit (about $25.00) so shifting is correct. I have a 3:90 rear end in my can and I think the AOD was set to work around 3:31. Then you have to modify the driveshaft, install an oil cooler, throttle pressure cable, etc. I am real happy and would do it again.
