Why does my rear hub have two bearings ?
Hi,
Last week, I got my first A, till now I always drove my T. I decided to check my brakes before driving. I removed all brake parts of one rear wheel. I have seen now, there are two bearings in the hub with a sealing. Why does anybody make this ? Is this a problem ? Is it better, if I replace it with a new one ? I hope, you can see this pictures: ( I will also try to add the pictures as Attachements) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KzF...ew?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pt-...ew?usp=sharing Thanks for help Willi |

Re: Why does my rear hub have two bearings ?
It sure doesn't look like my '29 rear hub at all. In fact, yours appears to have 4 lug bolts and a threaded outer housing for the outer part of the hub

It's a "Shay", replica car. Not one part is the same as an original Model A Ford.

Re: Why does my rear hub have two bearings ?
Does it have a four cylinder flat head? Does it have mechanical brakes? Is it missing a fuel pump? Does it have a blue Ford oval on the radiator? It doesn't look like any Model A axle that I've seen. Snao us some pictures, please.

How about a picture of your rear differential? We'll narrow it down from there. Someone may have just swapped for different hubs. If so, should be an easy fix. Fingers crossed.

Great looking Car! Looks like a 1931 Briggs fordor. Great choice for your first A. Room for friends on those ice cream runs. . Jeff

Re: Why does my rear hub have two bearings ?
Something is way off here.
The brake drum is supposed to be swedged on. Why is it threaded on the end of the bub? My take is the bearings might not be good for the original axle. They are smaller and narrower reducing the contact area. This can allow for brinelling (denting) of the metal race on the original axle, but it may be they changed that to a pressed on hardened larger diameter race. The bearings should have wheel bearing grease on them. If you did not clean the grease off then you need to look close for damage to the races and the rollers. You really need to do a good look at the drums and the shoes. How are the contact patches on the shoes? |

The front shoes are new and relined, but the rear shoes looks old and maybe never have been relined. I will have to reline them.
For me, the rear hub looks almost like a T hub, but my T has other diameters |

Re: Why does my rear hub have two bearings ?
Someone did something weird with that hub. It looks like an A hub with the lugs welded to the hub. Not sure if they had some kind of better idea with that thread part on the end. If all else looks A new hubs and drums would be the way to go. Post a picture of the drum. Unless it is thicker the lug nuts might not be tightening up on the wheel enough.

Re: Why does my rear hub have two bearings ?
Looks like the Rear Axle Assembly is from something other than a Ford Model A to me.

Re: Why does my rear hub have two bearings ?
In a service bulletin from april 1931? I found, that they had 2 bearings for the truck rear axle instead of one.
