T exhaust manifold threads

Does anyone have a thread chaser for the packing nut threads on my manifold? I have been working them with a thread file for a few evenings, getting close but still not as nice as a thread chaser could do. I would be happy to rent one and pay for postage. Rich

Actually, a new manifold costs a few dollars less than the tool.

I sent him a PM to check for flatness and sag before spending a lot of time re-working his old manifold also about gaskets.

Yes it is; another lesson in not reading correctly!

Redmodelt's suggestion on a new manifold is the best solution.

You can buy a 1 7/8 - 16 rethreading die for the price of 2 new manifolds but I am afraid you would need to be trained in government economics to justify that.

The one thing you never see archival footage of is the manifold threading department. When I was about 10 my grampa spent an afternoon looking through all his threading stuff for a die nut for us swearing it was a pipe thread. NOT. To this day I still inspect boxes of dies at swap meets looking for one. ws

I used a thread file and worked the manifold till the nut got tight as I would risk it.
Then I drilled a hole in one of the flats on the nut and put a pointed set screw in it to lock the nut on. It worked long enough for me to find another manifold.

Ah just a plain ole muffler clamp behind the nut. Has'nt backed off yet!!!

I purchased a die from MSC for about $120. Our club has a manifold sreaoghtening party one Saturday. We straightened and chased about 18 manifolds in one day. It takes about a 2foot cheater to run the die on the manifold threads.

This manifold is mounted on the motor with new gaskets, runs real well. I was just trying to make the threads work without disturbing too much. I worked the threads with a thread file, and at the advice of a friend detailed it with a three sided file. Finally got the packing nut to snug up without that annoying squeaking, screeching, thread galling sound. Pipe is snug, new muffler is on. Thanks for the advice and support guys! Rich

MSC sells a the file which has 4 different thd.pitches milled into the sides of the square file.they are cheap. And very handy around the shop.You will find it much easier to use as it files multiple thds at the same time.

Trainguy, thanks I have a couple of sets of these "thread files" you mentioned. Thats what I initially used, 16 threads per inch seemed to match my manifold. I did the final with a three sided file, which was much more agressive than the multi sided thread file. All in all I was tickled by the results. Rich

If you need a temporary fix for threads so worn that they will not grip and hold, try a wrap of aluminum foil on the manifold threads.

For a non-show car I cut across one flat with hacksaw, run the nut up the thread and clamp it with an exhaust clamp.
