Question Generator adjustment

My generator is overcharging. Does the third brush adjust the same as the model A? Away from the direction of rotation to decrease amps? Thanks, the ammeter was getting hot!

Well I had no luck, it is still putting out too much amperage. Any other ideas that I could look at? I think I will change out the ammeter next.

Have you set the "null" (neutral) point ? Easiest to bench adjust - lift 3rd brush from holder and connect 6 v. battery (gen. post & grd.) - the 4 small screws on the back hold the large brush holder - adjust large brush holder so armature stays at rest or just begins to rotate C.W. - drop 3rd brush, adjust to minimum output (C.C.W. or towards fender) and verify the generator will motor - adjust 3rd brush for charge rate.

That sounds real promising. My generator in the car would adjust from 10 amps to pegging the needle by moving the third brush. I will take it out and give it your test. Thank you.

You're welcome - nice Runabout !

10 amps is a bit high for normal driving unless you drive with your lights on - 4-5 amps is plenty if you have a cut-out on the generator. I'm a voltage regulator guy, myself !

I just did a generator that had new field windings and armature. I used a KR Wilson stand to check (runs direct drive at electric motor speed). After setting the null and with the 3rd brush at its lowest output setting I was pegging the needle. With the 3rd brush down and set for highest output. I had to adjust the brush plate to get below 10 amps, then reset the 3rd brush. If you do in car set, DO NOT TURN THE 4 SCREWS OUT ANY MORE THEN TO MOVE THE PLATE.
