Rocker arm oiling

The first picture shows how most rockers look when they come off an old motor. The second picture shows how most rocker shafts wear more on the left side. The third picture shows my rockers that were put on new hard chrome shafts in 1999, and run hard since. No wear whatever on the rockers or shafts, just a very nice oil film. Picture four is the shaft again. Picture five is the rocker stand where the oil goes up. I had to much oil on top so I tapped the oil hole and put in a 1/8 restriction The last picture is the trick. I cut off the end of the overflow tube to make it square. Debur the inside, and tap for 12-24. The tube ID is correct for that size. Find a 12-24 screw, and drill a 1/16 hole all the way through. Its easiest if you start with a phillips head screw, the bit is centered by the screw itself. Clean and debur the screw, put a drop of Locktight on it and screw it in. If the head of the screw is large enough to get close to the pushrod, grind it smaller. After this mod, if you idle the engine with a rocker cover off, the oil leaks out the rockers on your left as much as on the right, and a little squirt of oil comes out the tube as the designer wanted. |
