Re: Opinion please
Alan;
You didnt mention that in 1938 Ford offered 2 different coupes. So, while 1937 did have a std and deluxe with the same front sheet metal -- in 1938, the std and deluxe were different front sheet metal. |

Re: Opinion please
38 Std coupe would have to be one of the best early Fords. I'd love one

Re: Opinion please
The '38 Deluxe was a mistake....It should have never left the drawing board.
On the other hand, the '38 Standard is a thing of beauty....

Phooey, i'd be glad to have any "fendered Ford" as long as it did NOT have a c---- engine.

Re: Opinion please
If you want to know the "truth" look carefully at sold values.

Re: Opinion please
37 is more popular, but i would rather have a 38 standard coupe and only a coupe.....things like the rear fenders, trim, hood and grill.... 38 deluxe is just a parts car to me.

Re: Opinion please
For a long time the 32s, As, 33/34s, 36s and 39 deluxe/40s were the mainstay of rodding. (Plus the Ts). The others were the forgotten models that were overlooked. The street rod era started the trend towards the 37s. Suddenly what was overlooked was suddenly on trend. Then when there was an upsurge in the old ford interest, what was left, and affordable? the 38s, in both flavours and the 39 standards. Overlooked for so long the survival rate is not as good as the more popular models. The 38dlx/39std take a bit of getting used to. That leaves the 38 standard. It's a nice design and is pretty rare, due to the overwhelming popularity of other models. Still mech brakes so if you had a choice between 38 and 39/40 you'd go for the 39/40.
For me the 38 std is a nice looking car. the 37s, the 38dlx/39std coming up behind in the looks department. Mart. |

Re: Opinion please
I'll take one of each, thank you. I might prefer one model a tad bit more over the other but they are all works of art to me.

Re: Opinion please
Petehoovie I’ve opened a can of worms here. The 38 standard you showed a picture of is beautiful. I had a 38 ford truck for a brief while, it is not near as pretty as the 38 std. thanks to all who’ve responded

Re: Opinion please
38 standard front end is a deco jewel. WAY better than the deluxe, which is anything but.

Re: Opinion please
I have always loved the 1937 Coupe. A sexy car that Edsel Ford helped design. Art deco influenced design features.

Re: Opinion please
This was in the time frame that Bob Gregory was getting pretty well settled in at the Ford Engineering Lab. Bob had a knack for drawing up designs that were to Edsel Ford's specifications so he became well entrenched at the lab in that time frame. Henry Ford set the wheel base & design of the chassis so this left them with little room to make any major changes. Bob & Edsel were always trying ways to get the best look with the same frame and that lasted until 1941 when Henry finally relented on the wheel base and frame design.
I think Edsel, Bob, and the rest of their design team did pretty well considering the limitations that Henry always put in front of progress. Each successive model became, in small part, a lead up to the next model. The 1938 deluxe coupe & sedan cab designs led up to the 1939 deluxe designs, and so on, so one may not have happened without the other. I would take a 1938 deluxe in a heartbeat if one showed up in my sights at the right time and under the right conditions. Now it might snag a 1939 Deluxe quicker but hey, they're all good. |
