36' grill question. . . .
i'm working on my 36 5 window coupe's grill and I've got a question about the lower inside piece, I don't know what to call but it's kind of a shroud / gravel guard / stiffener thing with some vertical louvers stamped into it and a spot for the crank to pass through. I thought it was welded in but while moving the grill around cleaning it up, the inner piece moved. I don't see any spot welds anywhere, can this inner piece be removed? it would sure make it easier to tap a little dent out of the center bar. how do I get this out without bending it? thanks, kurt

The inner piece called the radiator shell apron (68-8240) can be removed. See photos.

Re: 36' grill question. . . .
you guys are right, it came out. it was really bound in there, I had to really open the grill shell up to get it out. that a great picture of a un-bent one. mine doesn't look so good. time to start tapping on it. anybody else got a picture of good straight ones?

how about pic three that shows bottom edge, mine has a curve to it. should that be straight too? it would get wider if straightened out, maybe a different factory?

Re: 36' grill question. . . .
Here's a photo of mine, taken when I last had the grille off. Just had it powder coated satin black. This photo may offer some help even though it doesn't show both edges.
BTW, I got a hardware kit from Roy Nacewicz ( http://fordscript.com/ ) that was a big help putting it all back together. Good luck, getting all the holes lined up was a pain. I used several tapered punches to do that. John

"I used several tapered punches to do that."
Plus a few small vise grips help a lot. Bruce

Is this piece really necessary?

Re: 36' grill question. . . .
It adds reinforcement to the front fender attachment as well as serving as baffle to direct air flow to the radiator, so I'd say the answer is yes, it is necessary. The same goes for the comparable panel behind the bottom of a '35 grille.

Re: 36' grill question. . . .
Yes it needs to be put back. With out it air flow to the radiator is gone. It put air flow to the bottom of the radiator. Didnt put mine in overheated so put it back no proplems.
