Nobody's mentioned the cost of their 9" yet???Yes, I have to consider the cost of the modification as well.

The stock rear axle is geared to low. Right now with the stock rear end about 50 - 55 is the top comfortable cruise speed. Plus getting rid of the enclosed drive line gets rid of the oil leak at the bell connection at the front of the drive line.

Thank you for the thread

When the rear spring is fully collapsed is there any floor pan clearance issues when using some of the rear ends mentioned?

Good Morning from Utah,

I just wanted to say I enjoyed your posts.

As to my abilities. At 74 I'm still leaning more about this ole car business almost every day. I've done three frame off restorations. I'm a little OCD in several areas pertaining to restoration work. My shop is well aquipped with a hoist and a wide selection of tools.
My goal is to turn this ole 47 into a comfortable cruizer with maybe some trips out of state. I don't intend to make this a show car, but a nice looking driver.

Thank you so much for your post w/ questions.
Sincerly, KenM

Are you aware of higher speed gearing options for the original rear axle (please ignore the rest of this post if you are familiar with this, I don't want to sound condescending)?
You can buy 3.54 and 3.25 gear sets for the original axle. You can also install a two speed Columbia overdrive that replaces the passenger side of the original axle (much more expensive than re-gearing). Either of these can be combined with an open drive kit that retains the stock spring.
I'm not saying you are doing anything wrong, just making sure you are aware of all the options.

Or a Columbia or Mitchell overdrive.

IMHO, I think the 9” rear is a great start, as you have one ready to go! If your converting the rear convert the old three speed too. About the same level of work for both conversions & sounds like your a pretty hip mechanic. Also think I read u have a T5 around somewhere you could use. Now that combo will give you a very comfortable & fun to drive long distance cruiser!!!
