Re: adding brake booster
The link to Macs shows you must have a core and they rebuild it. Will a hydro vac unit fit under the floorboard?

Re: adding brake booster
On early Birds, it was mounted on the left inner fender panel. Probably a good spot for the 39.

Re: adding brake booster
Just get a brake booster and put it on the crossmember between the pedal mechanism and the master cylinder in the stock master cylinder location. Here is one for a reasonable price:

Re: adding brake booster
Hi,
I've used one of these Midland units for decades on my 40. I have it mounted on the frame rail under the driver's floorboards. The nice thing about these units is that they are tapped into the hydraulic lines only and don't require a mechanical linkage like the ebay one shown above in message #9. They leak after a while and the best way to keep them working is use. If you let them sit, they'll start leaking around the diaphragm can. I had mine rebuilt by Ed Strain, Inc. in Florida and they did a great job on it. I was unaware of the Australian unit, PBR VH40 Booster. I found the best way to search for one is looking for a 55-57 T-Bird booster. |

Re: adding brake booster
The VH40 might be a bit big for your 39 but the VH44 is a bit smaller (7 inch) and is what was used on the old drum, drum holdens etc. so should work OK on the front brakes of the 39. It is also cheaper than the 9 inch VH40.

Re: adding brake booster
I have a VH44 installed on my 56 Fairlane, mounted under the car aft of the center cross member. I'm using it to power all the drum brakes. Seems OK to me. I paid about $150 for it delivered

Re: adding brake booster
Those remote brake boosters were popular and indeed standard fit on some cars. They are normally used on single circuit brakes and are normally plumbed so they act on the entire system and across all wheels. When dual circuit brakes came out it was expensive to supply two units per vehicle. That was when the integral booster/cylinder assemblies became popular.
It ought to be stressed that the booster will not make the brakes any better. It just lowers the effort applied by the driver to achieve a given level of braking. Mart. |
