Early speedometer with later transmission
I'm running a 1950 transmission and I want to use the earlier Speedometer that has female threads on the back. Can I use the early speedometer cable with the "bullet" gear from a th350? It looks like it would be the perfect adapter to do what I need. Has anyone tried it? Or is there a better solution? Thanks!

Re: Early speedometer with later transmission
really, in the whole history of automobiles, there are only a few variants in speedo cables. this is one case where the industry sort of set up some "standards". i have no idea what a bullet gear is, but basically you got to have matching threads on the drive and the speedo, again there are only a few types, and then match the drive ends of the cable. square? got a raised key to drive it? square on both ends? get a cable length that works with your outer housing, and go drivin

Re: Early speedometer with later transmission
That's why i posted here, I was hoping the barn would be familiar with the cables used. As you can see the cable for a shoebox has a "bullet" made on the end of it. As you may know, the early Ford speedometer head has female threads on the back, not the conventional male threads. What I want to do is use the "bullet" from a th350, also pictured, so I can use a prewar speedometer cable and mate it to this transmission. That is, if the th350 bullet and gear fits a shoebox transmission...

Re: Early speedometer with later transmission
The early cable will go right on the turbo 350 bullet. Why won't the cable go onto the '50 transmission? Most of those speedo gears and adapters are the same.

Or he can make up a cable with the T-350 end and the correct end for the early speedo. It looks like, from your pic, that one end had female thread while the other has male I don't remember how much a paid for a special cable, but I don't think it was that much
