Nice work. What did you use to make the mold?

My friend found a bar of new babbit at the Grand Rapids swap meet a week ago. I haven't seen any at swap meets in 20 years. I don't recall the name on the babbit, but it had an Indian Chief in full headdress.

Great use for the stuff. I must have over 50 lbs. Did borrow a mold and made a hammer one time.

Knight Automotive (formerly of Magnolia, MA now out of business doing Model A engines) used recycled steam babbit.

I queried him on this and asked him about the lead issue (I'm familiar with the low grade "magnolia" brand babbit available then and now) He volunteered that he mixed his own babbitts using raw stock and was attempting to recreate the Ford babbitt according to Ford documentation.

S. Ross's "How to rebuild your Model A Engine" website (now removed from the net) included a careful comparison of Ford's Model A Babbitt and modern babbitts available from the likes of McMaster-Carr and others. No modern babbitts were exact spot on in the assay, but many were close IIRC.

So I suppose Richard Knight was to be commended - assuming he met his objective?

He did volunteer me an assay result from a pour done only slightly earlier.

Wonder what that slightly was?

If you would like to see Steve Ross's website that Joe mentioned, click on the link.
Thank you for that. Back when Steve's stuff was on the 'net, I printed everything out - it currently sits in my file cabinet. A little harder to access, but guaranteed access - until the next shop fire?

I had a Ford 8N with a loader that used a "Stinger Shaft" Hyd. pump drive that ran off the crankshaft. The parts were long gone and no replacements in sight so I was able to pour a "coupler" from old Babbitt. I had some old inserts that I stripped and got just what I needed. It was not what I would have liked, but it worked and was working when I sold the tractor.
