Default Question for Mac Van Pelt

Mac
I have heard some talk about GL1-GL4 and GL5 and certain additives corroding the brass blocking rings in our transmissions.
What is your opinion as to what oil we should be putting in our early Ford transmissions? Is the GL5 stuff really bad?
Thank you very much Jay

Jay....from what I have been told, the GL4 gear oil spec does NOT have any additives that could harm yellow metals. The GL5 spec might have additives that can erode yellow metal. Look for any disclaimers on the package that refute this before you purchase that brand. Some do and some don't.
