California license plates
Is there a website to see if some old plates are registered or not?

Re: California license plates
I always call the auto club. If you are a member, they can look it up and let you know if the license plate number is being used.

Re: California license plates
You can search on-line in the personalized license plate section of the California DMV at https://www.dmv.ca.gov/ipp2/initPers.do
Just select the type of vehicle, choose No for whether it's company owned and then select the plate image. If you have the original plates, go with either of the top two selections. I checked out a couple of 1928 plates that were hanging in the garage and found they were available. Too bad they were only singles. |

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/dm...mes/contactdmv But before you do that, was there something wrong with trying Vern's helpful link where you can just type in a license plate # to see if it's available?: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/ipp2/initPers.do |

Re: California license plates
As mentioned, consider your plate a 'vanity plate' or personalized plate and check to see if it is taken.

Re: California license plates
My original CA 1929 plates were regestered to a motorcycle at one time...do not know if they still are or not.

Re: California license plates
You will need 2 plates to register you A in CA. They must be the same year as your A. Your ability to register the plates is authorized by the "Year of Manufacture Law" or YOM. You can just bring your two plates to the any CA DMV office and have them run the plates to see if the number configuration is available.

Re: California license plates
I got in touch with the California DMV by phone and pressing "0", had to hold for 30 minutes. The young lady looked it up and said the plates were clear. (800)777-0133 or (916)657-6978.

Re: California license plates
Something interesting to check on here in California is the "new" issue of the famous (1963 era) black and yellow Ca. plates. A great alternative for new and old vehicles and they are popping up all over the place.
It is of course not a YOM plate for the "A", but man do they catch your eye as the fly by! Our '30 Coupe has its original '63 plate - (black and yellow), that was sent to us as Dad purchased the car in '58 so all the vehicles converted over to this style in '63. As many have noted, AAA and staff have been very helpful with much shorter lines when you are doing research for plates and registration questions. Re: California license plates
Shec is correct. I was looking at the CalDMV site last fall, checking out some 1928 plates and found that a plate I wanted was available. I went to the local AAA and the very helpful lady ordered the plates for me. It took 3 months for the state to make the black with yellow letters, but AAA called last week and I picked them up. They are currently on my modern as my Victoria is still "non-op", but eventually they will go on her. The newly available black & yellow plates look so much better than the white ones.
