Default UHaul

Used a UHaul car transport to take my Model A from Minnesota to Cape Cod. Worked O.K. even with the narrow tires and the wheel strap method used by UHaul.

Had a number of people give me a thumbs up as they passed me...also, I had some people take pictures as they drove by. One guy on the New York thru way even tried to talk to me as they were passing !

I used the UHaul method since the commercial people couldn't give me a fixed time to pick up the car or deliver it. Plus, they wanted more than 1$ per mile (1500 miles from MN to Cape Cod). The UHaul car hauler was $240.

About 25 years ago, I did a one way UHaul trunk rental from Florence, SC to Toledo, OH.. all fine but the 55mph max speed and I-77 in WV was a white knuckle grip time Last large truck I rented was from Rider.. I'll say lots of improvement from 20 years + ago..

u hauls do the job if you dont mind the car being exposed to the elements... i used one to get my first A in 2006 from ILL to PA... the hydraulic brake systems work adequate...

I like the Uhaul trailers. Very well built and well maintained. They track well behind the pulling vehicle and the low profile makes for easier loading. I do utilize additional hold-down straps, just for extra safety.

If you read the feedback comments and national reviews Uhaul products are anything but well maintained! In fact many have been declared unsafe. Wayne

I have used the Uhaul trailer and dolly and have no complaints about the equipment. Some less than friendly folks, but that is local. They just seem to think they are doing me a favor.

I like the Uhaul trailers. I've used them several times with no problems. The major problem for me has been availability. I've reserved trailers in the past and cancelled the reservation when I didn't buy the car. No hassle from Uhaul.
I now have my own 16 ft. alum car hauler & I love it!

Here's my UHaul rig, ready for and in action. The entire outfit is colour matched with the whitewall theme tastefully extended throughout.

Is this what we're talking about?

I used a U-haul to haul my "A" to the engine re-builder garage. About 80 miles each way. No problem. I think the total cost was about $75.00 dollars for (I think - 2 days use) It's like any collectibles though, to the open road travel. I wouldn't want to go any long distances with a restored vehicle exposed to possible damage. It is better to be in an enclosed trailer of truck.

Twice I tried to rent one. First time was when my truck arrived in the container from Southern California and wouldn't start. They wouldn't rent to me since my tow vehicle was a Ford Explorer (nevermind that U-Haul had installed the hitch on the Explorer). Wound up towing it with a tow strap the 5 miles home.

The second time I had engine problems 400 miles from home and there was no equipment available. Wound up towing it with a tow bar similar to the one Joop used in post #18.

Marc, yes UHaul is good when needed.

Question I had with your cost is how much gas did you use pulling a trailer with your pull rig. We purchased a trailer a couple of years ago and find that I get about 5 MPG less with my Chev pickup pulling a trailer.

But anyway, it looks like you still had a good deal. Added gas may have been only a $100 or so.

As far as gas mileage went, the truck pulling the Model A and full of heavy household "stuff" got 12 miles per gallon of gasoline.

I used a u-haul to get my roadster home. It worked great. I found it was much less expensive to rent the trailer locally, drive it empty to get the car and then transport the car home. I don't recall the numbers, but a one-way haul cost quite a bit more.

used U haul a number of times and I have a gooseneck and a reg. car hauler trailer. If the vehicle is a long way off, say 500 miles plus I'll drive there with just my truck, and if it is a buy I just rent a u-haul. They sure do track nice...

I used the Sagamore along with the nice road from 25. Not very heavy use and the entrance to the Sagamore has it's own lane.

After the rest of the household "stuff" arrives, I'll find a club.

By the way, the car seems to like the West Dennis Beach Air...smooth riding.

I have used Uhaul quite a bit and like it. But I have had a couple of problems. I find that they do not like to rent if the car you are hauling is not on their list. In that case I put in a VW but I suppose that voids any insurance if there is a crash. The other problem I had was with the brakes. The master cylinder was froze up so there were no brakes. I told the agent about it when I dropped it off but he said they don't fix anything. He was just a hardware store. I guess some of the smaller dealers are more risky to rent from and are just jockeys rather than Uhaul reps.

I'd be nervous towing a Roadster or a Phaeton on an open trailer, unless maybe you backed the vehicle onto the trailer. Years ago a fellow near us lost his top towing a '29 Roadster down the road. Wind caught it and he didn't have the top secured any more than the original clamp screws. Boogered up the folding top frame pretty bad too

The quality of the UHaul store varies from location to location.

When I rented the auto transport from a store in Bloomington MN, the person wouldn't help me at all with loading the Model A. Yet, another store in Burnsville MN was very helpful with loading the Model A onto the transport.

I used one16 years ago and it was a very bad experience. I won't go into the detail but it was to go from Houston to San Antonio to pick up a Tudor. By the time all was said and one I could have hired a wrecker with a roll back had him dead-head to SA to pick it up and drop it off for less money.

I have used U-Haul a few times for different reasons without problems. When I reserved the trailer to bring the Tudor home, the U-Haul agent told me its weight and that it would be no problem.

Here is our Tudor outside our appraiser's house while on its way to our place. Note we did not use the U-Haul straps but substituted four tie downs instead.

Before anybody makes a smart remark, the red tie down is not holding on the spokes, but is just passed through to allow the excess to be wrapped around the bumper.

I used one from the cape to worcester. Straps fell off the wheels but the car stayed on the trailer. Thank God. Used it again from NY to worcester and cranked the straps and had no issues.

I used a U-Haul when I purchased my Model A and hauled it from Des Moines to Davenport, IA. The only issue I had was the trailer was behind some plowed snow so it was a little challenging to get out. And that it was -15 deg F when I picked the car up so strapping it down was a memorable experience!
