Sellers BEWARE!!
Hello everybody,
Fordbarn member djgj74 tried purchasing some model T parts from me with a fake cashiers check. Check supposedly came from his bank in a an envelope also with his banks adress in the return corner. My bank called his bank in Missouri and they never issued this check or any other check for this amount. Check then went to my banks main branch and was confirmed to be fake. Check is now in banks hands along with the name and address he wanted me to send the parts too. I didn't get burned thanks to my bank and I hope this helps others not to also. Don't know where else to list this but hopefully this is a heads up so he can't do it to you. Thanks, Rome Last edited by Rome; 04-17-2014 at 12:40 PM. |

Re: Sellers BEWARE!!
Good thing that you caught it. Have to be really careful now day's. I sold a car to a guy who came in from the Bay Area. He was in a big hurry to get on the road after he gave the bank check for payment. Big red flag as far as I was concerned. I made him go with me to my bank and wait for it to clear on the spot.
He was pissed off and I didn't care. Lucky for him the check was legit. It pays to be careful with people that you don't know.

Geez, I didn't know bank checks could be illegitimate! I use them all the time. I guard the trust I want a seller to have with me so I might suggest to a seller that I am working with to verify check validity before shipping. It pays to maintain that trust.

Re: Sellers BEWARE!!
The situation is bad enough with domestics checks (both personal and bank checks often called cashiers checks) that can take 2 weeks to bounce when deposited. Overseas checks can take as long as 6 months to finally bounce! Do you wonder why the Nigerian Scammers always want to send you a cashiers check?

Re: Sellers BEWARE!!
I always require a USPS money order when someone wants to pay by check for just this reason.

Re: Sellers BEWARE!!
Let me tell you something I do when listing an item for sale: I require contact by e-mail only. If name, address and phone # are required to list the ad all that info is slightly "off". Incorrect name addr. & phone #. Prior to doing this I was contacted by phone twice by a buyer I had blown off because his area code was from the Cayman Islands (heavy Indian accent by the way). At first he told me he got my # from the ad web site which wasn't supposed to be given out by the site. On the second call he admitted he got my # off the web. In other words traced me through correct information. Now all initial contact for a sale comes through the sale site only. Back & forth e-mails through Craigs list or e-bay only for instance (contact seller or reply through the site). If your convinced their OK enough to continue contact phone #'s can be exchanged. Not fool proof I admit and it may sound nuts to some of you but I haven't had that experience since I began doing what I described above. Also: get your passwords up to 10 or 12 letters with a symbol or 2 mixed in. Too simple is just dumb.

Re: Sellers BEWARE!!
That's. Why you never hand anything over until any check or money order clears.
