Re: Stuck\Broken Valves ?
If you run the starter with the key OFF you can usually tell if you have good compression on all 4 cylinders, because the engine slows slightly for each compression. If the starter seems to go fast during part of the cranking, then it most likely is speeding up due to low compression on one or two cylinders.
This is the quick easy check, but it's best to use a compression tester to know for sure what the pressure is. From your last posting, it does sound like it could be crossfire in the distributor body, as I've seen that happen a couple times. |

Re: Stuck\Broken Valves ?
Tom,
I call that the OAKIE compression test! MANY don't have a lot of MONEY or tools & have to "jury rig" or "invent" ways of testing stuff! Bill "Rich"--LOL

Re: Stuck\Broken Valves ?
You have done step one and found that you have a compression issue and you know where. Now on to step Two. Take all of the plugs out save #3. Crank the engine with the starter and listen to #4 to see if you can hear the air from 3 going into 4. You'll hear a hiss each time 3 goes up to tdc. THAT would be a blown head gasket. Step 3, remove the side cover and watch the rear four valves, looking for some hanging open. It about eliminating the possibilities, one at a time. About the only thing left would be a hole in the top of each piston, not likely. Stick with it, a good learning experience.

Performed the hissing test. I could hear a distinct hiss from number 4 with number 3 sparkplug installed, while I cranked the motor. Also, I had noticed some bubbles in the water in the past. Maybe its time to install a higher compression head... Marc |

Re: Stuck\Broken Valves ?
Have been having trouble with Ammeter not charging. Replaced it and checked all wiring for correct instalation. Checked output from Generator (10-12 volts) check Battery (6.7 volts); still get no charge on Ammeter regardless of RPM's. Turn on lights and it will discharge.
Need suggestions, advice and/or cure. |

Re: Stuck\Broken Valves ?
Ahem, back to the subject at hand. Marc, you have done good, even without lots of tools. Just remember, there could still be valve issues, although probably secondary now that head gasket has been verified. That can be assessed better when the head is off. Best of luck for what lies ahead. Mark Jacobson.

Re: Stuck\Broken Valves ?
Group,
The previous owner has told me that he had the head off a couple of times in the past with the car. So, I have a good chance when I replace the head gasket of "just" replacing the head gasket... Thanks for the pointers. Marc |
