8BA Truck Oil Pan Gasket for the cleanout

I need to replace the gasket on my truck oil pan gasket for the cleanout. It is leaking just a bit and time to change oil anyway.

Question is, where to get one. Mac and Drake and Carpenter are out of them.

I see on on ebay, but the ad says two are required. Is that correct?

A new set of oil pan clean out plate gaskets for Ford / Merc 1947-51 6 cyl and 1948-52 Ford pickup & big truck. two needed per pan, One goes on the inside ring and the other on the outside plate, often you can pull the plate w/o breaking the seal of the inside ring.

I suppose I could just make one, just hoped to buy one and put it on.

Van Pelt also shows them, but just one. Do I need 2?

You know, of course, that if you buy just one, the inside gasket will be compromised, but if you buy two, it won't. I'd spend the extra five bucks; then I'd have a spare I probably will never need.

Agreed 100%. Something like this comes down to time vs. money in my book.

What's your time worth? Figure an hour to make that gasket nice and neat.

Lord I hope I'm worth more than $5.50 an hour. LOL!

Seems like a good plan. My experience with gaskets is whenever I don't need them to not rip, they always do.

This diagram should help. Ring 6642 is inside the pan so it needs a gasket but it might not need replacing when removing large plate but the plate itself will need a gasket so buy 2.

The above diagram doesn't seem to show the second (inside) gasket. I hear these "cleanouts" are very susceptible to leaks. Perhaps the second gasket was a "home brew" fix because of this tendency?

I've never noticed that parts diagram before, but you are right. The second must be inside the pan for the lip of the clean out plate sits inside a recess at the large opening of the bottom of the pan. If it's leaking. I'm assuming that is a possible source. I would assume you would need to remove the pan to get to it properly though.

Interesting, on my 59A HD truck oil pan, I have a somewhat oval shaped clean out. I do not have PN6698, but instead have a ring that is threaded which is attached to the pan. There are studs that fit into the threaded holes. I wanted to use a gasket, but I couldn’t find one, and there are no longer any gasket type shops in town, so it was gasket maker for me.

The one you have is a rare bird and yes, you have no choice but to make that gasket.

My personal opinion, but...... that clean out thing on the 8BA oil pan is the stupidest design ever. The next dumbest is that oil dipstick fitting on the side of the pan.
Both of those are "solutions" that cause leakage problems.

I agree that it was NOT one of Henry's better ideas. But I still need to keep it from leaking.

The pan flange, the stud ring, and the clean out plate are all prone to deformation due to over tightening of the plate nuts to cure leaks. Even with new gaskets, if those surfaces are deformed, you will have leaks. We sealed ours with permatex on the rebuild.

The original design only called for a single gasket. The ring shown on the inside is the steel ring with the studs. Deformation of the oil pan is a fairly common occurrence from bumping into things over the years. You can try taking it apart (ie remove the oil pan) and try to straighten the mounting surface of the pan and the clean out cover. RTV sealer on the inside may help. The new replacement gasket is fairly thick and should seal by itself but one could apply the sealer to that as well. We stock the gaskets.

"The Right Stuff" is supposed to be the bomb for sealing these, on the inside and outside. Be sure to let it cure before putting oil to it.
