Re: Drivers Test!
My advice would be to try and stay as calm as possible, think clearly,
and don't get distracted about anything, so you can stay focused on driving confidently. Good Luck, hope you do well. .

Good luck. You've received some excellent advice above. Remember, driving is a privilege we all enjoy. However, its not a right.

watch out for trickey comands, as in turning the wrong way on a one way street--but stay cool and you'll do fine.

Re: Drivers Test!
Take your test in the 49. If you can drive that you can drive anything. Plus he/she won't be able to mark you down for forgetting to wear your seat belt since they aren't required. LOL GOOD LUCK!

Re: Drivers Test!
Don't know about where you live but where my kids took their test the parking test was done in a church parking lot with cones. LOL
I took my test in Downtown Detroit during early rush hour traffic. Things have changed in 40 years. You will do great! |

Re: Drivers Test!
The instructor would probably fail him because of the car if he used his 49. They would say its not safe for a young driver. My best advice is take your test in a small car. I took mine in a little 2 door saturn, pulled straight into the stall for parallel parking and didn't even have to back up.

Re: Drivers Test!
Try to schedule your test last thing in the morning and the instructor will want to make it short so he can get to lunch.

Re: Drivers Test!
A few years ago my young friend Jonathon Adams took his test in my restored 49 F-1. F-1 is equipped with seat belts and turn signals. Truck passed and so did Jonathon. The examiner got a big kick out of it too. Jonathon has turned out to be a real good Model T, A, and V-8 mechanic

Pay attention, stay alert and you'll do just fine... Don't be like me and get a traffic ticket the first day you have your license...

Good luck Joshua. Let us know how it goes. It was only 53 years ago that I took my drivers test in my Dad's 57 Chevy. In less than a year I was driving my 35 3w coupe.

Way to go joshua, don't do what I did first day, blew out 1st gear in my 54 ford, just the 1st of many cluster gears. I learned to repair that tranny with my eyes closed.

Re: Drivers Test!
Well - I hope you passed yesterday! I took may test way back in my Dad's 1963 Pontiac Catalina 2dr HT with 421ci, 4sp. A State Trooper in a full uniform with a gun on his hip and one of the those big park ranger type hats with a chin strap sat in the passenger seat with me for that test ((that gun got me very nervous). I was shocked when he asked me to parallel park as I had never tried that before - lucky I just greased it into the spot without a hitch!

Re: Drivers Test!
Just remember that there were no cell phones in 1949! Therefore it would be totally inappropriate to be talking or texting on one while driving!

Re: Drivers Test!
Watch those burnouts in the 49. About 50 years ago while driving my first 50 Ford I took off from a stop sign in a very brisk way and snapped the left rear axle about 10 inches from the diff. It took me about 2 days to figure how to get the short piece out by using a coat hanger with a loop bent on one end. I have since learned that broken axles on 49-51 are not uncommon. I am much more careful how I drive the 50 I have now. Bob

Congratulations!! That license is one of the most valuable things you'll ever have in your wallet. Freedom is one of it's benefits as you no longer have to depend on others to get where you want to go! Enjoy it and the"ol' 49"

Re: Drivers Test!
Congratulations! I took the MN driver's test almost 56 years ago in a 1952 Ford Country Sedan, and remember the experience like it was yesterday. A score of 70 or better was needed to pass, and I made a 72. Back then, however, they mailed your license to you about 10 days later, and you couldn't drive solo until you received it. That was the longest 10 days in my life.
