Where do I look next??!
I need to find the chassis number to get the title for my Tudor sorted out. It was not visible on Left side frame rail, on the part you can see easily, nor down beside the firewall bracket.
So I took the front left wing off, rubbed down to bare steel all along the rail from firewall to radiator, and there is no sign of a number!?! Is it possible it is hidden behind the firewall bracket? It seems to me there are too many holes drilled in that area for someone to consider stamping a number? Where next please? |

Re: Where do I look next??!
In my experience, the number is somewhat more toward the front of the frame rail than this picture is indicating.

I don't know if it is my imagination but I can see numbers and a star on the left of the pic where it is still dirty.

Re: Where do I look next??!
There look like some very faint numbers about 6 or 8 inches in front of the steering box.
I did see a picture of someone's car where the numbers were alongside the firewall foot. Get your strongest glasses on and try shining a torch at a low angle across the surface. Mart. |

Re: Where do I look next??!
A frame I have in the basement has the number starting about 3 inches past the center line of the sector shaft hole. Try cleaning the frame just inboard of the firewall foot.
There should be two more places where the numbers will appear, one near the B pillar of the body and the other close to the center of the rear kick up of the frame. Naturally both will require lifting the body. The second and third numbers may or may not have the prefix; 18 for the V8, or AB for a 4 cylinder car. Last edited by Fordors; 12-31-2012 at 04:44 PM. Re: Where do I look next??!
Could someone have ground off the number of a hot car??? Get some of the acid that is used to raise ground off numbers on a pistol or rifle and see if that would help. Just a shot in the dark.

Re: Where do I look next??!
Simplest way to do this is "nic-a-date" . Usually some on epay . Coin collectors use it on buffalo nickels and whatever . It will definately do what Lawson says .

Re: Where do I look next??!
Using your first photo as a reference. My number starts just to the right of the hole in the frame and runs toward the firewall. I had to peel up the webbing but did not need to un bolt the firewall. I used steel wool. The numbers are not very deep.

Re: Where do I look next??!
If this is an English car, would'nt the #s be on the right side(American passenger side); but it looks like it is a left hand drive car(or it has been changed over).

Re: Where do I look next??!
This is a LHD car, but if originating from outside the US, it may never have had a chassis stamp. Most countries then only required an engine number which was the cars official serial number. If the engine was changed, the new number was recorded on the ownership papers. This was the sitiuation here in Australia & New Zealand & also I think in Canada.

Re: Where do I look next??!
Tudormannz, you are right. David G reminded me that, being a Danish car, the serial number is not stamped on the chassis, but attached to the firewall in the form of a tag, with steel rivets. I have this tag, so just need to persuade the authorities, who in the UK like to see a number on the chassis frame.
Now I can stop sanding rust! |
