riley 2 port?

would like to hear from anyone whos got experience with these...recently finished up an engine with one but i cant seem to get the topend to not clatter. set the lash as tite as i dare (008) but its still noisey. there is no misadjustment at the valve tips. can anyone offer a suggestion to quiet it down?

Is it an original or a C Yapps? Original Riley 2 ports used a felt pad to oil rocker arms. C Yapps have pressure oiling. I have an original with C Yapps rocker arm stands. Just a thought.

one of charlies. he says not to use the felt pads as it comes apart and blocks drain holes...noise does seem to be magnified by the valve covers and i made sure rockers dont hit covers

You didn't say anything about your method oiling of he rocker arms. The felt pads are/were used on the original Riley's. C Yapps are drilled for pressure oiling. After I installed the C Yapps rocker arm stands I had a clearance problem but that is Apples and Oranges. I asked about the oiling as I have a Riley 4 port that I acquired from a buddy who is not mechanically inclined and he didn't realize or wasn't told that he had to manually oil the rocker arms occasionally and almost destroyed the original arms. Very costly error.

hi bill..the rockers are the new and improved type...has needle bearings at the shaft and lubed by pressure oil feed from the block. rockers arent drilled to feed the tips over valves tho..maybe i just have to live with the noise???

I would hope that some oil would migrate to the tips and lubricate them. It may be the cam profile.

More than likely the cam shaft ramp and how you are adjusting the valves. If you
are adj. the valves @ TDC, try this, with the lobe straight down. Look at a cam,
out of the engine to see what I mean. What dia. lifters, how big a cam?

Does the 2 port have 1-1 rocker ratio, if not your Model A cam will not be ground right. Which will cause more valve noise.

i believe the ratio is 1.3:1 and the cam card claims .325 lift 232* @050 284 adv dur at this point ill prolly just have to deal with it unless it starts eating cam lobes!

I'm using stock "A" springs, no spacers and had a red line of 4,000 RPMS although the engine has run over that when the wife drove it. I asked her if it hit 4,000
and she said "Oh, it went much higher than that". But she was more concerned with driving and didn't look at back the tach. The tach is turned to locate the redline at 12 o clock. If I remember correctly I set the valve
lash at .012 .014. IN. EX. I use Castrol HD 30 and so far have had no problems. I'm now going to install the engine in the wife's 29 RPU.
