Default 302 identification help

My avatar has a stock 302 in it. The characters (D1357) cast behind the starter indicates it is a 1977. The part number on the dip stick indicates it is a 1985. Is there any real way to know the year of manufacture of this engine? Probably a mish mash of parts. It doesn't really matter at this point but it would be nice to know. Thanks guys!!

I guess you could compare date code casting numbers on the block, heads and intake manifold. If the same year, then bingo. If not, a mix of different model years.

an 85 will have a rear sump base a 77 will not.so you have a 77 with later base and dipstick.

Ford casting numbers have a code. This site has some info. https://itstillruns.com/identify-eng...2-6018819.html

According to that a D1 would be 1971 if I'm reading it correctly but the part number usually looks different since it is a mix of letters & numbers in the first 4 digits. They made them a long time for sure.

This is another ID link. http://www.mre-books.com/interchange/interchange2.html

Sal.........yes it has a rear sump.

Rotor.......yes that is the casting number so that indicates a 1971. I was told the last digit was used not the first so I was told wrong. This makes sense because I got a replacement starter for a 1977 and it would not go into the hole by just a smidgen. That is what started my original question.

Thanks to you both!!

Coupeman, Darrell is the one that mentioned the rear sump oil pan, so he gets the credit.

I was used to seeing the front sump pan for years on SBF engines. Some configurations have the two bump configuration due to chassis design like the fox body Mustang & Capri as well as some of the trucks. They can use either sump but the oil pickup has to be changed to match the sump used if I remember correctly.
