Default slide lock questions

The slide lock was missing on my 30 coupe, so I bought a repro lock to get the right kind of original setup. Installed in the door, sliding it to the left didn't go very far, didn't lock the door. I thought maybe it was upside down, so turned it over and tried again. The bar slid to the right easily, but didn't lock the door either.

Which way is correct, and where does the bar go to lock the door? Does anyone have a diagram showing how the sliding latch works? Does the repro bar need to be modified to fit? Suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks for the picture. Check out these pictures of my repro lock. It doesn't look quite the same as the one in your picture. Let me know what you think. What do I need to do to make it work? For Ray64: the upholstery is off the door, so the slot is not a problem (yet).

Mine isn't missing, but the slide is difficult to move to the locking position. And a few pulls on the outside handle causes it to unlock. I'm interested in hearing more of a discussion on the sidelock issue, so you guys who are in the know please give advice. Thanks

Follow up to my previous questions:
When the lock is mounted on the door, it doesn't want to slide to the left (toward the edge of the door). It appears to be hitting on something. I can't see much inside, but there doesn't seem to be anything for it to engage. What is it supposed to engage to lock the door?

It locks when slid toward the back of the door. Shine a flashlight in there and see what is holding it up. You may need to remove the handle and latch as the sliding part in the latch may be frozen by rust or bent.

I ended up removing the door latch from the door. The part in the door latch that slides to lock the handle (shown in Bob C's picture) was stuck (90 years worth of gunk). 30 minutes in a chemical bath and lots of WD-40 freed it up.

The slide lock on the inside of the door pushes the sliding part on the door latch to prevent the door handle from turning. It's a little stiff, but everything works now.

For Ray 64: When I tried to put the upholstery panel back on the door, it wouldn't fit over the slide lock knob. Probably explains why there was no slide lock in the first place. Somebody messed up when they made the panel and decided to leave it out.(Non-original upholstery effort.) I'll have to modify the opening to make room for the knob to slide.

Thanks for the help. It is much appreciated.
