Hi Bill,

I have one just like yours that I found on Ebay a couple of years ago. Mine also has CANCO stamped on the bottom. Yours appears to be in a little better shape than mine.I have the one for the Model "T" and this one. I have never seen the one that has the V-8 emblem on it, have you?

I created this post so that everone who is putting together a tool kit knows what the tire patch kit looks like. And that cardboard was not original.

The cardboard I believe goes back to around early '70's, and I think Dennis Carpenter may have been the source.
Patch kit and fuse kit were sold by Ford, but I don't believe they ever came in the tool kit as supplied with cars...they were essentially accessories.

I have seen some very impressive tool displays on the Concourse, and I've got to tell you that the most impressive are those in which the proud owner's woodworking skills are conspicuously missing from the display. Henry Ford did not offer an optional Tool Display Box, so IMHO, the display suffers from the inclusion of a display box. I must hasten to add that I know of none that have drawn a point deduction, a nod in the direction of "Don't kill the car". Still, I can't help being more impressed by a simple burlap bag than a varnished display box.

Yes, there is something inherently wrong with good tools in a display cabinet rather than in use/available for use.
The display box toolsets are usually the ones that contain a generous sprinkling of Model T tools mixed with the V8 and restoration involving 1/4" of enamel paint...
When I was a teenager, the toolset from our '48 Ford was actually most of my tool collection. I could accomplish almost anything with the adjustable if nothing else in there would fit...still have the '48, still have its tools. Fortunately, it is an export car with the complete tool kit!
My Father (the original owner) threw away the original jack after the car fell from it in about 1949...I finally replaced it this year at Hershey, for an absolutely obscene amount of money...guess I shouldn't grumble, since I got the '48 for free!

If you see a patch kit and it is made of cardboard it is not authentic. It must be made of METAL with a metal push on lid. When you display a patch kit with your tools everyone will know it is not authentic. Metal with painted graphics and CANCO on the bottom.

Bill, You have raised an interesting subject here. Your metal can is definitely 100% authentic and most if not all of the carboard containers are repros. The Ford oval is the give-a-way. The repros have a modern(70's) tall Ford logo while the originals have the squatter logo with the more traditional 30's style script. See photos below. It is interesting to note that Ford supplied both a metal and cardboard Fuse Kit during the 30's era and both are authentic See photo below. This will be an interesting subject for my next trip to the Archives.

I think my patch kit is a different supplier...will try to remember to bring it in for a comparison with Bill's. I think mine is something like "steelco"...
I have a couple of the steel fuse kits with I think predominantly yellow paint...I assume this were made way after '32, as the part was carried at least through '48.
How about bulb kits?? They are relatively common in Model 40 and also with flanged bulbs, probably Model 48. The PN prefixes are ink stamped...anyone ever find any in other models?

Good thread! Below are pictures of some of the fuse kits etc. that I have. As you can see, these are all metal. I have seen the fuse & lamp kits with several different model numbers stamped on them. The one pictured has a Model 18 on it. I was thinking that perhaps the "1" was actually a worn "4", but if you look at the "flag" on the "1" you can see a slight bend or flare instead of a straight line that would suggest a "4".
